Marcus Shute Jr., a 34-year old lawyer from Nashville, raised a few eyebrows when he decided to grow his locks in 2002. But he still refuses to cut his hair in hopes to make a point that his personal appearance should not affect his professional career!

Throughout the last couple of weeks this youngin has been doing research on some great figures of our past that helped mold our society in major ways.

We’ve also come to a realization that he is interested in becoming a lawyer one day. We figured out what it would take for him to reach this goal of his and the type of accountability he needs to show along his journey.

Constant check ins and talks about participating in class, having immaculate attendance and being a civil citizen makes me confident about the decisions he will start to make.

Understanding that goals and positivity outweighs popularity ANYDAY makes me excited about this young man’s future. He’s a warrior and I’m blessed to be in his presence.

Please take the time to read...!

Over the last couple of months I’ve been challenging my young stars to do research on icons that were originally labeled as criminals, terrorists, or anything negative to tarnish their image, but were actually standing for equality for all.
I allowed the boys to pick any individual they wanted to write a research paper on. I didn’t expect to receive such great content that would actually educate myself a bit deeper on the individuals my young stars chose. Not to mention, this is work done by boys who are supposedly “troubled” individuals themselves.
After reading each paper we would zoom meet or talk in person about the thought process behind them choosing the people that were on the papers. Some boys had great reason behind the icon they chose and a few others didn’t have reason, but ALL of these boys were surprised at how these men/women were treated because of what they stood for. One icon in particular, organized a group of young men to mentor and educate on how to stand up for themselves, family, and their well-being. Society made him out to be a terrorist, but in reality he was a hero, role model to many minorities and he was imprisoned for his teachings because the public saw the growth of his organization as “DANGEROUS.”
The kid who wrote the research paper about this icon told me, “Coach, this guy reminds me a lot of you, what if they tried to arrest you for helping us?” My response was, “now you see what you face as a young man, you see that you have no room for error, especially in school. Take advantage of every opportunity to improve yourself, to improve your mental state and make your mother cry tears of joy instead of tears of anguish.”
