Poetry Workshop: Black Women and Beauty

Wednesday 15, Feb | 12-1p EST | Online

Deepen your experience of the exhibition, Reckoning: Protest. Defiance. Resilience. and let it inspire your writing in this virtual ekphrastic poetry workshop. Ekphrastic poetry responds to a work of visual art-generally a painting, sculpture, or photograph. During this workshop, we will explore a form called pantoum which weaves lines of poetry together through repetition. The workshop will be led by international slam poetry champion, Anthony McPherson. McPherson's work incorporates various art forms, as well as a myriad of character impressions, to address race, art, and his own biracial identity. He's appeared on Button Poetry, in HuffPost, and Upworthy, and has reached over ten million views since his first viral poem, "All Lives Matter: 1800's Edition."

Free. Registration is required: https://smithsonian.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZEkcO2qpj4qGt2-zO2H-_woQ-xAawPfKPTZ

Foundations of Faith: The First African Methodist Episcopal Church of Los Angeles

From humble beginnings in the home of the formerly enslaved Bridget “Biddy” Mason, the First African Methodist Episcopal Church of Los Angeles has grown into one of the largest, most prominent churches in the African American community.

Bridget “Biddy” Mason (1818–1891) helped found the First African Methodist Episcopal Church of Los Angeles (FAME) in 1872. Enslaved in Mississippi, Mason had traveled with her enslaver to California in 1851 and won a landmark court case to gain freedom for herself and her daughters. With money she had earned as a nurse and midwife, Mason invested in property and amassed a sizeable fortune. Initially, church members gathered in her home, but with her savings, she helped purchase a church building in 1888 on Azusa Street.

Foundations of Faith: African Americans and Islam

African Americans have practiced Islam since their arrival in North America and are an integral part of the world community of Muslims.

"It’s not the color of the physical body that makes a man a devil … God looks at our minds, our actions, and our deeds. So we have white Muslims, brown Muslims, red Muslims, yellow Muslims, all colors … We now recognize all men as brothers, and we look at them according to their works." -Muhammad Ali, 1976
