๐ค WHY WE ARE PAUSING BLACK CAT ADOPTIONS DURING OCTOBER ๐โโฌ
At Landon & Roger Legacy Rescue, every animal deserves a legacy, and sometimes, protecting that legacy means making decisions that not everyone will agree with.
For the month of October, our rescue has made the decision to temporarily pause adoptions of black cats.
We want to explain why, because the conversation surrounding black cats, Halloween, and animal rescue deserves more than rumors and superstition.
๐โโฌ Black cats already face an uphill battle...
Research involving nearly 8,000 shelter cats found that black cats experienced the lowest adoption rates and highest euthanasia rates among the coat colors studied. (Sited Source: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7597961/ & https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7597961/ )
Think about that... an animal's chance of finding a family can be influenced by something as insignificant as the color of its fur. :(
Black cats have spent generations being associated with bad luck, witchcraft, and fear. These stereotypes have consequences for animals who deserve nothing more than a safe home. Their lives matter! They are so much more than just a color, its a real life.
๐ So, what about Halloween?
For decades, shelters across the country have debated whether black cat adoptions should be paused during October. Some organizations have implemented temporary restrictions out of concern for the animals' safety. Others continue adopting black cats throughout the season. We do not want to perpetuate myths or create unnecessary fear. However, animal cruelty is REAL. Impulsive adoptions are real. And the responsibility we carry when placing an animal into someone's care is real.
๐ค So why are we pausing adoptions?
Our decision is precautionary. We believe adoption should be a lifelong commitment, never something influenced by a holiday, an aesthetic, or a passing trend. We recognize that many wonderful adopters seek out black cats in October, and we absolutely support those families. Our decision is not a reflection of every potential adopter's intentions...It's simply a temporary measure our rescue has chosen while continuing to care for and advocate for these animals.
๐พ What happens after October?
Our black cats will still be here, still deserving, and still waiting for families who will love them long after the Halloween decorations come down! We encourage anyone interested in adopting one of our black cats to reach out, learn about their personalities, and begin the conversation about providing a permanent home after October.
Because a black cat isn't a Halloween decoration.
They're not a superstition.
They're not a symbol of bad luck.
They're someone's future best friend. And they deserve to be treated that way.
