Altars in the shop windows.

In 2023, Hollister High students partnered with downtown businesses, including Bene Gifts, Crave W**e Co., Farmhouse Cafe, La Catrina, Mad Pursuit, Running Rooster, Mariposa Tax and Business, and Bella Mia Salon, to build altars honoring their loved ones along San Benito Street.

Every altar was a student’s family story, displayed in the heart of their own town.

Bryn Dueñas, Hollister High Advanced Art, Class of 2024, designed the poster for the
first annual Altares on San Benito on November 5, 2023. Swipe for the night she
invited the city to: MC Rosalinda Sanchez, Banda Nuevo Carrizal, Animation Dance
Community, Maria Spandri, DJ Fredo, and a folklórico finale by Carisma Mexicano.

A student designed the invitation, and local artists filled the stage. That was the idea
from day one.

Ms. Tachiya’s students have been busy building spatial reasoning, fine motor skills, and creative problem-solving — the same cognitive foundations that show up years later in design studios, architecture firms, and engineering labs.

In 2019, we saw a gap — almost no creators of color in podcasting. So we have brought the mic to thousands of Title I school students since 2020. Here’s what happens when students own their voice:

Students who record and listen back to themselves develop vocabulary and fluency faster — especially English learners.

Podcast production activates more ELA standards than most traditional assignments — writing, revising, speaking, and self-editing in a single session.

When students own a creative role, they show up — youth media programs measurably reduce chronic absenteeism and increase school belonging.

This is why we started. This is why it matters.

Introducing DrART: Drone Photography + Blacktop Chalk Art— a brand-new STEAM program from The Audacity Performing Arts Project!

Led by instructors Paty and Leo, students learn real drone operation, aerial photography composition, and large-scale chalk mural design — then use the drone to document their own artwork from above.

Inspired by French visual artist JR, whose monumental public installations transformed how we see community storytelling, DrART places young people at the intersection of visual art, technology, and civic voice. From FAA safety protocols to color theory to visual journalism, every session builds skills that go far beyond the classroom. ✨
