On this day in 1607, three ships carrying 104 men and boys of the Virginia Company arrived on the shores of what would become the Chesapeake Bay. They disembarked and declared the land for King James I. After opening their orders from the Company, they continued up the river, searching for a strategic location to build their base. Understanding the area was already inhabited by the tribes making up the Powhatan paramount chiefdom as well as other tribes, they looked for areas where Indigenous people did not already live. Their other chief concern was the potential for a Spanish threat from the sea.

This Pamela Wright pin/brooch/pendant is a Colonial Dames of the 17th century piece and features the CDXVIIC National Headquarters in Washington, DC. It was the project pin for President General Elizabeth β€œLibby” McAteer during her 2015-2017 administration and was designed by her National Project Chair, Sandy Bassett. Isn’t it gorgeous? πŸ’™πŸ’›

The pin is no longer available, but might be found on online auction sites.

Of all the graphical charges in heraldry, animals have always played a large and signicant role. And since heraldry is an art form it has never limited itself to actual creatures but let its imagination run riot into the truly fantastical.

A β€˜winged sea horse’, for instance, is made up of the front half of a horse with wings stuck on plus the back half of a large fish. Consider also an heraldic sealion: half rampant lion, half fish.

In their design of arms over the centuries, heralds have mixed and matched whenever they felt like it – and they still do!
