Myths About Fostering

Myth: “I could never foster, I’d get too attached.”
Truth: You will get attached. That’s kind of the point. Fostering isn’t about not loving the dog. It’s about loving them enough to let them go when the time is right, so you can help the next one.

Myth: “I don’t have enough time.”
Truth: Most foster dogs just need a safe, structured place to decompress. You don’t need to be a trainer or stay home 24/7, you just need to show up for them.

Myth: “What if I mess it up?”
Truth: You’re not doing it alone. With the right rescue or support system, you’ll have guidance, resources, and a team behind you. Every effort helps them on their path home.

Fostering isn’t the end of their story, it’s the chapter that changes everything.

You’re their chapter of growth. Their safe chapter. The one where things finally start to make sense.

You’re not just helping them get adopted.
You’re helping them leave better than they came.
You’re the Chapter Before Home.

URGENT FOSTER OR FOREVER HOME NEEDED FOR POE‼️

At only around a year and a half old, Poe is still very much a young dog. He is playful, energetic, affectionate, and deeply bonds to his people. Like many young dogs, he still needs continued guidance, structure, and someone willing to help him keep maturing into the dog he was meant to be.

We thought Poe had a home, him and the male dog are buddies, but the more dominant female in the house is just not accepting him in her space - and that’s not anyone’s fault.

This is the reality of rescue sometimes. Not every home is the right fit, even when everyone involved had the best intentions. What matters now is finding Poe the safe, stable placement he deserves.

Please help us network for him. The right home changes everything.

Checklist: What to Prep Before Your Foster Arrives

✔️ Crate – Set up a properly sized crate in a quiet area.
✔️ Leash and Collar – Have a properly fitted collar and leash ready.
✔️ Food and Bowls – Confirm what food they’re eating and have bowls ready.
✔️ Safe Space – Create a calm area with a bed or blanket where they can decompress.
✔️ Toys and Chews – Have a few durable toys or chews available (nothing overwhelming).
✔️ Training Plan – Be ready to start working on simple structure like crate time, potty breaks, leash skills, and calm behavior from Day 1.
✔️ Patience and Time – Set aside the first few days for a slow, structured routine without too many new experiences.

Remember: Less is more at first. Keep it calm, keep it simple, and focus on building trust.

Love matters, but structure changes lives.
When fostering, affection is just one piece of the puzzle, what truly helps dogs thrive is routine, leadership, and clear boundaries.

Crate time. Structured walks. Calm coexisting. These tools build confidence and trust, making your foster dog more adoptable and ready for their next chapter.

Fostering isn’t just about love, it’s about preparing them for what’s next.

Bringing a new foster dog or a newly adopted dog home isn’t about tossing them into your life and hoping it all works out. It’s about slowing down.

We see it all the time, “Here’s your new home!” and the dog is left to figure everything out on their own.

But dogs don’t thrive in confusion. They crave direction, clarity, and leadership.

If you’re expecting an instant bond just because they live with you now, you’re skipping the part that actually builds the relationship.

When dogs come into our home, we treat it like boot camp before summer camp.

Because the truth is, we don’t know this dog yet.
We don’t know their triggers, their habits, or what they’ve learned (or haven’t). So we lead.

That looks like:
• Meeting their needs, then giving them time to decompress (yes, in a crate)
• Structured, leashed outdoor time, even with a fenced yard
• Supervised, slow interactions, not free-for-all play
• No full “house tour” or unlimited freedom on day one
• Using a leash indoors so we can guide, not guess

And one that surprises people the most, we’re not rushing into couch cuddles and freedom. Not because we don’t care, but because we do.

We’re building a dog that understands expectations, trusts human guidance, and can move through the world with clarity.

Freedom comes later.
Connection grows through structure first.

This chapter isn’t just about giving a dog a place to stay. It’s about giving them the skills, stability, and confidence to move forward successfully.

Go slow. Be clear. Lead them through it.

This guy has been showing up for nearly three years-
steady, good, and ready.

And we’ll be honest… there’s no big reason he’s still waiting and getting looked over.

Bull is:
- crate trained
- easy in the house
- medium energy
- perfectly content with a bone and a place to relax
- successful at day camp with other dogs
- loved by his foster (a trainer) for how simple and solid he is

He’s not complicated, he thrives with clear structure and routine.

If you’re looking for a steady companion, Bull is your guy. Total goofball, guaranteed to make you laugh.

No kitties, good with kiddos.

We met Goober from Rescue for the Misunderstood and spent time working with him and his fosters.

We focused on structure, boundaries, leash skills, and overall manners, the things that help a dog not just be in a foster home, but actually grow in it.

Because this chapter isn’t just about waiting.
It’s about learning, building skills, and setting them up for what comes next.

Thank you to everyone who supports what we do, your donations go directly toward training scholarships for foster dogs like Goober.

Stop Waiting. Start Doing.

Too many dogs are returned, statistically, to shelters or rescues around the one-year mark, not because they’re “bad dogs,” but because no one ever took the time to do anything with them. No guidance. No structure. No expectations. Just hope that the dog would somehow “grow out of it.”

By the time they’re a year old, these dogs have had months to form habits, rehearse unwanted behaviors, and build patterns that are now overwhelming their humans. And suddenly it’s a panic: “Fix it. Hurry. Change this.”

But here’s the truth: dogs aren’t short-term commitments. They aren’t plug-and-play. They need time, effort, patience, and training, not just when problems pop up, but from the very beginning.

Training builds communication. It creates structure. It prevents issues before they start. And most importantly, it helps keep dogs in homes.

Don’t wait until you’re desperate to make a change. Be the kind of dog owner who shows up from day one. Because dogs deserve better. And we can do better.
