On July 21st, 1979 Jay Silverheels, became the first Indigenous Native to have a star commemorated on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Harold Jay Smith, was a full-blooded Mohawk, born May 26th,1912 on the Six Nations Indian Reservation in Ontario, Canada. He excelled in athletics, most notably in lacrosse. In 1931 he was among the first players chosen to play for the Toronto Tecumsehs, where he earned the nickname "Silverheels". And in 1997 he was inducted into the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame as a veteran player. In 1938, he placed second in the middleweight class of the Golden Gloves tournament. This led to his working in motion pictures as an extra and stuntman in 1937. Billed variously as Harold Smith and Harry Smith, before taking the name Jay Silverheels. He appeared in low-budget features, mostly Westerns, and serials before landing his much loved and iconic role as Tonto on national tv from 1949 until 1957 along with two movies. In the early 1960s, he was a founding member of the Indian Actors Workshop, in Echo Park, Los Angeles. Where Native actors refine their skills. Today the workshop is still a well established institution. Silverheels died on March 5, 1980, from stroke, at age 67, in Calabasas, California. He was cremated at Chapel of the Pines Crematory, and his ashes were returned to the Six Nations Reserve in Ontario

"Born about 1845, Comanche leader Quanah Parker lived two vastly different lives: the first as a warrior among the Plains Indians of Texas, and the second as a pragmatic leader who sought a place for his people in a rapidly changing America.
Parker's birth was a direct result of the conflict between Native Americans and white settlers. His mother, Cynthia Parker, was captured by the Comanche as a child and later married his father, Chief Peta Nocona.
In 1860, after Parker's father was killed by Texas Rangers, young Quanah moved west, where he joined the Quahada Comanche. Parker proved an able leader, fighting with the Quahada against the spread of white settlement.
But in 1875, following the U.S. Army's relentless Red River campaign, Parker and the Quahada ultimately surrendered and moved to reservation lands in Oklahoma.
In his new life, Parker quickly established himself as a successful rancher and investor. The government officials he had once fought soon recognized him as the leader of the remaining Comanche tribes.
Parker encouraged Indian youth to learn the ways of white culture, yet he never assimilated entirely. He remained a member of the Native American Church, and had a total of seven wives.
The respect Parker earned is evident in the Panhandle town of Quanah. There, by the Hardeman County Courthouse, stands a monument to the town's namesake: Quanah Parker, chief of the Comanche."

Happy indigenous survivors day! Although I think of the holiday as a practice in acknowledging those who helped us and love us, not the genocide it was.

Celebrating Indigenous Families
๐ŸคŽSolo Greene Family
This family has faced their share of hardshipsโ€”nothing has come easy for themโ€”but through their perseverance, they continue to thrive. Although Sawaya Greene is not pictured here, this family has focused on strengthening and preserving our culture and traditions.
Solo Greene has carried forward the teachings of the late Larry Idaho Greene and June Greene-Stewart, passing down the importance of singing, dancing, and understanding who we are and where we come from. This family has elevated our cultural heritage, investing in Nez Perce Tourism. Stacia Larrae Greene-Morfin, founder, owner, and CEO (pictured far left), along with co-founder and co-CEO Ciarra Greene (pictured third from the left among the women), have been key leaders in this effort. Together, as a united family, they continue to prosper, sharing their knowledge with pride, resilience, and a deep sense of cultural pride.
I deeply appreciate this family for embracing our traditions. A family that prays together, has fun together, and stays togetherโ€”these are the values that Idaho Greene taught Solo, and now, Solo passes them down to his children.
