🎶 Hector Berlioz and his Symphonie fantastique - this is not just music. It’s a story of passion, obsession, and madness, told through the orchestra.

📅 Paris, 1830. A young Berlioz falls madly in love with the Irish actress Harriet Smithson. So deeply, he’s ready to do anything for her. But here’s the problem: she doesn’t even know he exists. So what does Berlioz do? He writes a symphony. But not a normal one - a symphony where the music itself becomes a novel, with its own plot, characters, and even “special effects.”

👉 Part Four: March to the Scaffold
The most cinematic scene: in his dream, he murders his beloved and is led to ex*****on. The orchestra becomes a grim marching band, the guillotine falls - and the music literally cuts off with a crash.

👉 Part Five: Dream of a Witches’ Sabbath
The finale is pure phantasmagoria. The hero finds himself at a witches’ sabbath, where his beloved turns into a grotesque witch dancing among demons. The medieval funeral chant Dies Irae appears - but twisted, mocking, grotesque. It all spirals into a diabolical carnival.

🔥 Why does it matter?
Berlioz was a revolutionary. He shattered the idea of a symphony as “pure music.” He made it into drama, almost theater without words. In a way, this was the birth of the film soundtrack: music that tells the story all on its own.

🎥 You could say Symphonie fantastique was 19th-century Netflix. Episode by episode: love, despair, death, and the supernatural. And the intensity? It still hits like a shock today.

So if you think classical music is boring - just listen to the finale of Symphonie fantastique. Honestly, it’s scarier than most modern horror films.

Last week, we asked if you had an instrument collecting dust. This week, someone brought us a clarinet. 🩵

It’s a small handoff with a big possibility: another musician may get the chance to make music with it.

Thank you to the donor for trusting MACC Cares with its next chapter. If you have a gently used band or orchestra instrument you’d like to give, learn more at maccidaho.org/macc-cares. 🎶

Before the downbeat, there’s a room to set up, music to work through, and a whole lot of listening. 🎻

Since the school year has settled into routine by now, many of our young musicians have the instruments they need to get started this year — which is wonderful news. 🥹 As MACC Cares continues to grow, we want to be ready for the next student who comes looking for their instrument.

If you have a gently used band or orchestra instrument sitting in a closet, collecting dust, consider giving it the chance to make music again.

Donated instruments can become part of MACC Cares and help make music more accessible to families in our community. 🎻🎺🎷

Have an instrument to donate? Scan the QR code or visit maccidaho.org/macc-cares to learn more.
