ICYMI🚨 BREAKING: DOJ Demands Accountability from CEIR Over Voter Data Sharing
The U.S. Department of Justice has sent a formal letter to David Becker, Executive Director & Founder of the Center for Election Innovation & Research (CEIR), raising serious concerns about potential violations of the Driver's Privacy Protection Act (DPPA).
The letter, signed by Associate Attorney General Stanley E. Woodward Jr., highlights that CEIR obtained voter files and personally identifiable information—including driver's license numbers, partial Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses—through ERIC (Electronic Registration Information Center).
⚠️ Key points:
The DPPA makes it unlawful to obtain or disclose personal information from motor vehicle records for purposes not permitted under the Act. While sharing data with government agencies may be permissible, using protected information "for certain partisan purposes is not permitted under the DPPA—regardless of whether a state consents" DOJ is demanding full documentation of all ERIC-to-CEIR data sharing since October 2017
📅 Deadline: October 7, 2026 — CEIR must produce detailed records of all data transfers, correspondence, and documents related to DMV-obtained information.
The DOJ warns it hopes for voluntary compliance "rather than forcing the United States to take further action."
