Anosognosia

As challenging as mental health conditions are there is an additional issue that can and often does make it more difficult to maintain the treatment that can help.

When someone rejects a diagnosis of mental illness, it’s tempting to say that he’s “in denial.” But someone with acute mental illness may not be thinking clearly enough to consciously choose denial. They may instead be experiencing “lack of insight” or “lack of awareness.” The formal medical term for this medical condition is anosognosia, from the Greek meaning “to not know a disease.”

Anosognosia is a condition where you CAN'T recognize other health conditions or problems that you have. Experts commonly describe it as “denial of deficit” or “lack of insight.” It falls under the family of anognosias, all of which happen when your brain CAN'T recognize or process what your senses tell it.

This condition can happen with mental illnesses, keeping a person with a disorder like schizophrenia from recognizing that they have a condition and need to take their medication. This often prevents people with mental illness from reaching a “recovery” where they can lead a productive independent life.

Schizophrenia and Psychosis Action alliance has officially launched $COPE 360™ (Schizophrenia Cost Perspective Engine) — a first-of-its-kind platform designed to reveal and visualize the societal impact of schizophrenia across all 50 states.

Built from years of studies, economic modeling, and published science, the interactive dashboard transforms national and state data into data visualizations spanning healthcare, caregiving, housing, employment, disability programs, justice involvement, and social systems.

Users can explore national impact, compare states, generate charts and graphics, and apply insights to advocacy, research, policy, funding discussions, and public awareness efforts using ready-made templates for writing op-eds, connecting with lawmakers, or advocating on social media.

A mom from Washtenaw County has organized a group of aging parents who worry about supportive housing for their adult family members when they/we are no longer here or unable to care for them. They have been meeting regularly to discuss what that supportive housing should look like and also how to make a plan a reality. I want to share the address of their NEW WEBSITE!
