Learn more about Wreaths Across America at their website www.wreathsacrossamerica.org. The very same wreaths that have been placed at Arlington National Cemetery every year are placed right here in Butler, PA along with many towns across the country and even some across the world. Our mission in Butler started small with a ceremony in Diamond Park and wreaths placed to represent each branch of ser
vice in our armed forces. In April 2019 a group of a few enthusiastic volunteers got together to raise funds to purchase wreaths for the 900 veterans at the Butler North Cemetery on North Main St. In December 2019, our first year in a cemetery, all veteran graves had a wreath placed by over 200 volunteers. It was a cold and rainy December day and to witness so many coming together for this cause was awe inspiring. Local Veterans and the Bantam Marine Corps League conducted the Wreath Laying Ceremony; the very same ceremony that is conducted at the very same time at all locations throughout the country and world at 12 noon. When the ceremony is finished, volunteers spread out and start laying wreaths on the graves. When a wreath is laid volunteers are asked to say the veteran's name and to thank them for their service. Doing such ensures that the veteran is remembered and honored even if their loved ones are no longer around to pay their respects. Our volunteers in 2019 consisted of groups like the Boy Scouts, the Girl Scouts, 4H, the DAR, some of Butler's JROTC cadets, Real Estate companies, and many private citizens that wanted to be part of this mission. It was truly an amazing day for our local chapter and the community. In 2020, despite Covid 19 we were able to reach our goal once again and cover every grave in the cemetery. Many of the same volunteers from 2019 joined us again and lots of new ones were excited to come together for this great cause. Our wreath goal will be bigger but we have faith in our community that it can be acheived! December 18, 2021 is the day this year. "Live Up to Their Legacy" and Remember, Honor, Teach.
