A new study by University of Vermont researchers suggests incorporating climate change predictions in soil modeling is critical to understanding what Vermont soils will look like in the next century.

While the findings show that turning farmland into forest would increase SOC, in an agricultural state like Vermont this is not necessarily feasible or even desirable. However, encouraging the use of regenerative farming practices that leave living roots in the ground year-round, such as cover cropping, or transitioning from corn-fed to pasture-raised animals, would make a big difference to combat climate change.

ecoNEWS Vermont is excited to announce our new Student Corner!

K12 Students across the state of Vermont are encouraged to send in their work which connects them to Vermont's natural resources. We hope for submissions that include the scientific background of AND/OR an artistic representation of nature.

Students can submit projects they create for school or personally and the ecoNEWS Vermont team will choose up to three pieces to include in each issue.
