Bayard Rustin (1912-1987) was gay man instrumental in the American Civil Rights movement. He worked alongside of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King starting the Freedom Rides. He was the principal organizer of the historic March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963. A Quaker, Rustin is credited with inspiring Dr. King’s interest in Gahndi’s teachings on non-violence.

As part of his involvement in the Freedom Rides, Rustin served twenty-two days on a chain gang in North Carolina for violating state Jim Crow laws regarding segregated seating on public transportation.

Even though he often worked behind the scenes during the height of the Civil Rights movement, he became more public in the subsequent fight for gay rights.

Marsha P. Johnson (1945-1992) was an important activist in the gay rights movement of the 1960s and 1970s in New York City.

Born in New Jersey, Johnson moved to NYC immediately after high school. Life was hard and she made her way through s*x work, waiting tables, and drag performances.

Johnson was one of the people present at Stonewall Inn on June 28, 1969 when police raided and a riot began. While her role in the riot is unclear, her presence there and the presence of other transgender people is undoubted.

Johnson, along with Sylvia Rivera, was active in early Pride parades and q***r liberation organizing. However, Johnson and Rivera also called out the gay and le***an communities’ anti-trans bias and organized for trans liberation. In 1970, Johnson and Rivera founded Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR), “an organization dedicated to sheltering young transgender individuals who were shunned by their families.”

In 1990 Johnson was diagnosed as HIV positive. She was found dead in 1992, the worst year on record for anti-LGBTQ violence according to the New York Anti-Violence Project.

Johnson’s legacy remains important to the American q***r community as one of the movement’s early advocates and critics. Rest in power Marsha P. Johnson.

Art and activism are deeply intertwined in the South…and we’ve seen firsthand through Southern Equality Studios how transformative q***r creativity can be. The biggest barrier to art-making isn’t lack of ideas, it’s funding. That’s why we’re launching the 2026 special grant round!

This round includes 25 grants of $500 for LGBTQ+ artists across the South who are using art as a tool for justice, visibility, and change. Applications are open now through Jan 15, 2025! QTBIPOC-led projects prioritized, but all LGBTQ+ Southern creatives are encouraged to apply. Nominate an artist or apply yourself at https://southernequality.org/apply-for-our-2026-southern-equality-studios-grant-round/
