As many of you have heard by now, UVM announced its intention to lay off UE 267 members on the grounds crew in favor of private contractors. Per contract article 19, the union now has an opportunity to present alternatives. You can help us by signing this petition which will send an email to UVM administrators. Hands off the grounds crew!

Hi everyone,
At the end of last week, the window to submit documents to WTW for dependent verification closed. Thanks to a joint effort between UVM unions, the deadline can be extended, and you can complete dependent verification at UVM HR until 9/19. We think this is a huge win for those of us who had privacy concerns. Please let us know if you have any concerns.

In July, the university began asking employees to submit personal documentation, such as birth certificates or marriage certificates, to a company with a history of data breaches in order to verify dependent coverage eligibility.

Outstanding rally today held jointly by members of UVM Staff United, UVM United Academics, and UE 267. So many people showed up, and we delivered testimony from hundreds more, to express our concerns with this audit.

UVM administration was nowhere to be found today. After deciding unilaterally that they can compromise the privacy of thousands of their own employees, they cleared out to avoid having to confront the tough reality about what they’ve done. We left plenty of reading material for them to consider over the weekend.

This was an amazing display of solidarity, and most definitely not the end of this issue. As always, we’d like to hear about your own experiences with this audit if you’ve decided to participate. If not, we encourage you to gather the necessary information and wait until closer to the deadline. We hope UVM will finally come up with some answers they’ve so far refused to provide.

Quick update on the dependents audit:

UVM continues to refuse to bargain with us on this issue. We’ve asked for some non-sensitive information to better understand which of our members are impacted by this audit which they have refused to provide based on confidentiality. Yet, they appear to have already furnished impacted members’ social security numbers to the company conducting the audit, as well as those of their dependents.

Furthermore, they’ve stalled on our grievance filing and our cease and desist letter. It is perfectly reasonable that many of us will want to wait until the university shares more or makes better commitments to protecting our information, but we still encourage everyone to gather the necessary documents to be prepared for the audit. Please reach out to us if you’re having or anticipate having difficulties gathering these documents.
