Prof. Alexandra Garrett's / Saint Michael's College public history students always have SUCH good questions! Everything from how do historic preservation and climate change intersect, and how do we balance technological advances with historic character and integrity in old buildings? Thanks for another thoughtful discussion!

Congratulations to all our 2025 Historic Preservation award winners!

Yesterday at our Fall Meetup and Annual Awards we recognized a variety of Queen City property owners for their commitment to and stewardship of their historic buildings.

And this year’s recipient of the Ray O’Connor Award goes to the incredible Melinda Moulton, who has been such a champion of the Queen City and Preservation Burlington!

A great evening of celebration, conversation, updates from other local organizations including Ethan Allen Homestead Museum, Heritage Winooski Mill Museum, North Star Community Hall, local authors Jim Jones and Carolyn Bates, and students in the UVM Historic Preservation Program. And a fantastic look back at the history of Grasse Mount with Glenn Fay.

More on the specific projects and awardees soon!

Tomorrow @10 am! Church St Walking Tour

Join us for a walking and talking tour of the Church Street/Downtown neighborhoods. We will convene at the historic Wilson Hotel (c. 1815) located at 189 Church Street. The Wilson Hotel was formerly the home of Samuel Mills, the publisher of the city’s first successful newspaper, and our newsletter namesake, The Sentinel. The graceful Federal style proportions and front door, now at a second-floor level due to grade adjustments on Church Street, speak of long-ago refinement.

Vermont’s Historic Theater Curtains

Live Event

July 24: 7:00 pm, Contois Auditorium, Burlington
Free and open to all!

Between 1880 and World War II, painted theater curtains were artistic features of most New England villages and towns. In Vermont, painted curtains graced stages in town and grange halls, opera houses, and community theaters. A culture of local variety shows and traveling, professional talent flourished in front of those curtains in some very remote Vermont communities.

In a tour of some of the 177 curtains in Vermont, Christine Hadsel, director of Curtains Without Borders, provides a glimpse into the world of talented and often sophisticated artists who were part of the rural cultural scene, illustrating the rich cultural history of small-town Vermont before World War I.

Event is part of the Vermont Humanities Council's Speakers Bureau.
