Piedmont Fibershed

The Piedmont Fibershed encompasses the area roughly within a 200 mile radius of Durham, North Carolina. What is a Fibershed? What about our clothes?

Piedmont Fibershed is a community organization dedicated to building a regional fiber system in the Piedmont of North Carolina centered around local fibers, local dyes, and local labor. We seek to support and develop a regional fiber economy that benefits the environment, workers, and the local economy. A fibershed is a natural textile resource base that uses the region as its guiding force in sourcing and making available fiber, textile, and dye products. We’re so invested in locally sourcing our food.

Twisted Threads Fiber Arts Guild is coming to Twin Birch & Teasel studios in Siler City for a natural dye day, and the Piedmont Fibershed community is invited to join in the fun.

Bring your pre-mordanted materials, raw dye materials, and a pot if you have one.

This is an exploration and experimentation session, not a structured class. Everyone will learn from each other and share materials, successes and ideas.

The dye studio is located on the lower level of Twin Birch & Teasel at 135 N. Chatham Ave., Siler City, NC. Use on-street parking instead of the lot behind the apartments.

There is no fee charged but donations are appreciated.

On Sunday Nov 1st, Piedmont Fibershed board member Kristi Eskelund of Fidelis Fields Farms (Fidelis Fields Farm ) is presenting at the Sustainable Agriculture Conference in Winston-Salem, hosted by Carolina Farm Stewardship Association Carolina Farm Stewardship Association

This workshop covers the properties of wool and how they create positive outcomes in agriculture as wool pellets. Often considered a waste product, wool can be processed into pellets that sequester carbon, reduce water use, and fully biodegrade, adding nutrients and organic matter to soil. This interactive session teaches participants about the properties of wool, its benefits for soil health, and its applications for the home or a small market garden.

She’ll also be selling wool pellets at her booth!

On Sunday, Nov 8th, get together with other folks interested in building a sustainable, regional fiber economy in central North Carolina!

This family friendly event will have activities and snacks for kiddos and adults alike. (Children must be accompanied by an adult).

We’ll craft and connect at Love House, a historic building that houses The Center for the Study of the American South on UNC Chapel Hill’s campus. You’ll have the opportunity to meet others in our community passionate about local fiber and textiles, discuss Piedmont Fibershed’s ongoing projects, and share your ideas for growing a better-connected fiber community in central NC.

Anyone interested in the fiber and textile economy and sustainability are welcome: farmers, artisans, educators, retailers, community organizers, hobbyists, etc.

Parking information: There is street parking (free on weekends), and public parking is available at the Morehead Lot, a 5 min walk from the event venue.

This family fiber farm in northern Alamance County raises "Angora goats and French Angora rabbits for fiber, as well as honeybees, chickens, and whatever else crawls/creeps/galumphs into our world. We produce Mohair, Angora, honey, eggs (when the chickens aren't slacking - we do not cull for age), and other fiber products as time/resources allow."

Looking for an opportunity to access professional, production-scale weaving equipment?

We are seeking skilled weavers to spend two weeks exploring their choice of a 60” industrial Dobby loom or 60” treadle loom for projects such as: scaling their weaving projects, complex weave structure for producing yardage, weaving artisan and specialty fabrics, sampling new materials, creating fine art, and more!
