Embarrassing explanation trotted out by School Committee tonight. In summary: Despite all the successes and lessons learned in year one, let’s ignore reflective practice, not bother with an improvement cycle, and go back to a less collaborative, less effective K-5 schedule… because we see this as a bargaining chip 🫪

Since late June 2025 these educators have carried the mantle of ’s CKLA curriculum implementation. Every month they gathered in grade-level teams to review upcoming unit materials, adapt and create visual supports to share with students and fellow educators, plan facilitation moves for school-based meetings and operate as the de-facto “CKLA experts” for the 2025/26 school year. While educators were compensated for their after school meetings, the time together was nowhere near the total given.

Throughout the year educators have been reminded that implementation is a journey, that “year one is really year zero”, and the work this year was just the beginning.

But now that work has come into question. When and how will implementation continue effectively without dedicated time for all educators to plan? Why sign up for a second round of implementation team with no clarity around what that might look like next year?

Will this team of classroom teachers, reading specialists, EL and Special Education educators, and district curriculum leaders be shuddered? Shrunk? Will the work be reduced from in-person collaboration and leadership to the “content manager” of a shared Google Folder?

What caused the School Committee to about-face on a one-year extension of the Early Release / Collaborative Planning Time calendar? when we still have so far to go?

Shock, anger, and disappointment. Why are we going backwards?

With an 80% response rate BEA educators have made it clear they support an abbreviated schedule on Good Friday to make the most of our winter school days while still providing educators and community members the opportunity to meet their religious obligations.

While Burlington municipal employees do not participate in the GIC, its decisions have far reaching impacts on health insurance premiums across the state. Broken systems need reforms that elevate preventative care, not just more rate increases and reduced services! Do your part and protect health care for our fellow public employees.

Governor Maura Healey is poised to underfund the Group Insurance Commission in her upcoming budget. This will result in the GIC shifting significant costs onto subscribers for the health insurance plans it provides to public employees, including more than 30,000 members of the Massachusetts Teachers...

Thankful for the hundreds of community members, including several BEA and educators, who came out (with so many donations!) and stood up for due process and immigrants rights at the Burlington ICE facility. Thanks also to for joining and speaking at the event to how he and other representatives are making every effort to shed light on to inhumane ICE practices and limit their power. Much to be thankful for this weekend, and plenty still to be done!
