A little field trip to Visit Fort Dodge earlier this week was a great reminder of one of the best parts of being connected through iTIP: the people!

As Fort Dodge looks to grow its sports tourism efforts, they invited colleagues from across Iowa to share experiences, lessons learned and advice for strengthening sports event recruitment. iTIP was honored to contribute a statewide perspective to the conversation.

The discussion took place at the beautiful Matt Cosgrove River's Edge Discovery Center, overlooking the Des Moines River. This interactive museum tells the story of Iowa's waterways and conservation. It's also helped spark new investment and development in the surrounding neighborhood.

On paper, Iowa's destinations may compete for the same events and visitors. In reality, there's a genuine desire to see each other succeed. That's the beauty of iTIP's statewide network. We share ideas, learn from one another and celebrate each other's successes.

Changing seasons can bring changes for our teams, too. Maybe you’re ready for a new challenge, know someone looking for their next opportunity or have a young person in your life ready to enter the workforce. Right now, the iTIP Job Board has openings across Iowa’s tourism and hospitality industry for a variety of skill levels and interests.

Even if you aren’t looking, you may know exactly the person who should see one of these opportunities. Take a look and help us spread the word.

Tourism professionals from across the state recently spent a few days in Grand Island, Nebraska for the 2026 Upper Midwest Convention & Visitors Bureaus Conference. They joined peers from across the region to exchange ideas, build connections and learn from one another. Several also stepped to the front of the room to share their own expertise.

Among the group were four Elevate Iowa Tourism Education Scholarship recipients, putting those scholarship dollars to work through continued learning and new connections. We love seeing our partners take advantage of opportunities to grow professionally while also having plenty of knowledge and experience to contribute.

Visitors to Iowa’s county parks spend an average of about $82.72 per trip. For campers, some of the biggest pieces of that spending are groceries, gas, campsite reservations and restaurants. Those are dollars moving through Iowa communities as part of a camping trip, and statewide, county park visitors generate an estimated $374 million in spending each year.

Cooler nights, changing leaves and campfires are a sure sign that fall camping has arrived in Iowa. 🍂 It’s a timely reminder that there’s plenty happening beyond the campsite.

September 22 is National Scenic Byway Day, giving us a reason to look a little closer at the 14 scenic byways found across Iowa. Eleven are state-designated and 3 have earned national designation, but the real significance is found in the Iowa stories those routes help tell.

The Loess Hills rise along our western border, while the Driftless Area brings bluffs, valleys and trout streams to northeast Iowa. The Mississippi has shaped generations of communities along our eastern edge. Madison County's covered bridges are recognized around the world, and the landscape around Anamosa and Stone City helped inspire Grant Wood.

Those stories aren't standing still, either. Sixteen public art installations have been added along Iowa's byways in 15 small towns, each designed around something meaningful to the community where it lives.

That's why having 14 scenic byways matters for Iowa. They help us preserve the pieces of our state that make one region different from another, while giving communities new opportunities to keep adding to the story.

The better we tell those individual stories, the harder it becomes to define Iowa by a single image or experience.

Candidates are out in Iowa communities right now, meeting people, asking questions and listening. Tourism should be part of those conversations.

iTIP recently put that into practice by sitting down separately with both major-party gubernatorial campaigns. We talked tourism, shared what the industry means to Iowa and started relationships that can continue after Election Day.

Now there are opportunities to do the same locally.

You don't need a formal presentation or a stack of economic impact reports. Introduce yourself. Ask questions. Listen. Share a tourism story that connects to what matters in your community.

Each September, the Clay County Fair & Events Center welcomes crowds that can top 300,000 over nine days to Spencer, a community of roughly 11,000. That kind of reach has made the Fair one of northwest Iowa's most recognizable tourism assets.

But here's what caught our attention about a recent TRAVEL magazine feature: the Fair may have opened the door to the story, but Spencer became the story. The article moves beyond the fairgrounds to the community's Art Deco downtown, riverfront, history and year-round character.

There's a good reminder in that for all of us in Iowa tourism. Sometimes the best-known thing in a community isn't the entire tourism story. It's the opportunity to introduce people to the rest of it.
