In a world where people can feel overwhelmed by poverty, loneliness, uncertainty and fear, hope can seem like something we simply wish for.
At the Society of St Vincent de Paul (SVdP), we understand something different: hope becomes powerful when it becomes action.
Every day, SVdP members across Burbank, across Los Angeles, across the country, and across the world, put hope to work. They visit neighbors in their homes. They provide food, clothing and assistance with utilities. They help people find stable housing. They listen. They accompany. They remind people that they matter.
Dolly's words about “digging” love out from beneath hurt and fear offer a beautiful description of what service can do. Sometimes our work isn't about fixing everything. It's about helping someone see a way forward—and walking alongside them.

Vincentians are known for their home visits, but “home” doesn’t always look the same.

Last year, St. Vincent de Paul Vincentians met neighbors where they were, through nearly 2 million person-to-person visits across the country:

🏥 In hospitals
🏛️ In prisons
🏘️ In eldercare settings
🏙️ In community spaces

There are a great many men and women who have too much and who wish to have more; there are a great many others who do not have enough, who have nothing, and who are willing to take if someone gives to them. Between these two classes of men, a confrontation is coming, and this menacing confrontation will be terrible: on the one side, the power of gold, on the other the power of despair.
We must cast ourselves between these two enemy armies, if not to prevent, at least to deaden the shock. And our youth and our mediocrity does not make our role of mediators easier than our title of Christian makes us responsible. In this, there is the possible usefulness of our Society of St. Vincent de Paul.”

Today we joyfully celebrate the feast day of our patron, St. Vincent de Paul!

St. Vincent once reminded his confreres that, “God asks primarily for our heart — our heart — and that’s what counts.” On this feast day, we ask for his intercession so that we, too, may surrender our hearts to God and live lives of true charity in service of our neighbors in need.
