As April comes to a close and taking some time to reflect, I’ve decided that Belonging Bags will continue as a project. There was so much support with the announcement and momentum was just lost in the mix. In addition, the recent launch of a nonprofit connected to my full-time role, balancing both at the level they deserve has been more than I anticipated.

That said, this mission still matters deeply to me.

I will continue collecting NEW donations throughout the year and working through what distribution looks like. When, how often, and who we serve will be intentional as I build this the right way over time.

Things may move slower than originally planned, but the purpose remains the same. This is still about dignity, care, and making sure children feel a sense of belonging during times of transition.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month

Every April, communities across the United States come together to raise awareness about child abuse and the importance of prevention. 

Child abuse and neglect affect millions of children each year, and prevention begins with strong families, supportive communities, and access to resources. 

When communities invest in children, provide support to families, and ensure kids have safe environments, we help create a future where every child can grow up with stability, dignity, and opportunity.

At Belonging Bags, we believe dignity matters from the very beginning. Small acts of care, compassion, and support can send a powerful message to a child during times of uncertainty.

Together, we can build safer, stronger communities for children.

As of March 1st, SJRC Texas & Belong has launched Stage II of Community-Based Care in Region 8, expanding services across ALL 28 counties.

Community-Based Care allows local organizations to lead child welfare services within their own communities. With this next phase, SJRC now supports children and families through case management, reunification, kinship, and adoption services in addition to intake and placement.

The goal is simple but powerful: Every child deserves safety, stability, dignity, and a permanent place to call home.

Programs like this depend on strong communities. When local partners, volunteers, nonprofits, and neighbors step up, children entering foster care experience greater stability and support.

That’s where community initiatives like Belonging Bags help make a difference by providing dignity-centered support for children entering care.

This work began from lived experience.

Welcoming children into our home and walking alongside them through healing and growth shaped how I understand dignity, stability, and belonging. Those experiences continue to guide why Belonging Bags exists today.

As the Spring Break season begins and many of us plan beach days, road trips, and adventures, it’s important to remember that not all children get to experience these carefree moments, especially those in foster care.

For children in foster care, school breaks often come with uncertainty, disrupted routines, and few opportunities for travel, connection with peers, or just being a kid in the ways many of us take for granted. Normal experiences like vacations, sleepovers, or family outings can be harder to access, and that matters. Normalcy is the ability to engage in age-appropriate activities and feel included. This is an important part of a child’s emotional well-being, yet isn’t always guaranteed for kids in care. 

Belonging Bags exists to help bring dignity, comfort, and belonging into the lives of children in foster care, not just with essentials, but by uplifting the sense that they too deserve joy, connection, and meaningful experiences.

Transitions can be some of the hardest moments for children in foster care. During times of uncertainty, small things can make a big difference.

Having personal belongings, essentials, and comfort items helps support stability, confidence, and emotional well being. Dignity is not a luxury. It is a basic human need.
