✝️DAY 23-28 of our 40 Day Foster Care Lent Challenge✝️

It’s been a whirl wind as our family navigates a challenging season of foster care and at the same time battling all the fun colds and stomach bugs that come with being parents. This week we’ve gone through both.

We launched this nonprofit 28 days ago in a relatively calm and steady part of our journey, to now which is the complete opposite. Foster care is bound to come with unexpected changes. This week’s challenge is to reflect back on a time where you had serious change in your life. It probably felt like life would never get better in the moment. But it is always an opportunity to put your trust in God.

Even in our craziness GOD has provided. We met our challenge goal and then some! We haven’t been able to post the last few days because it’s been a really tough go at it. Our challenge today came from a familiar verse that popped up in our Bible app just when we needed it! 1 Peter 5:7 (see pictures). The whole chapter just spoke to our situation and was so comforting.

All the things I wish I knew before becoming a foster parent:

1. Foster Parenting is a lot like Coparenting with a whole team of people.
This is hard for me. It’s hard not to take things personally when it feels like every aspect of your parenting is being commented on by everyone. From caseworkers to bio parents, everyone has a different idea of the way things should go. It feels impossible sometimes to keep up with.

2. Trauma is a rollercoaster.
It is usually right when you’re at the top, enjoying the view, thinking “I can do this!”, when trauma rears its ugly head. Then, everything comes crashing down again. That’s also a good thing too! Then when you’re at the bottom, you can look up and say, “I know I can get there again!”

3. Plan on your plans being changed.
It’s hard to plan for tomorrow, let alone plan a vacation. The future is always uncertain in life, but in foster care, you normally can’t plan on anything. The case could look like it’s going one way, and the next it goes a complete 180, only to flip back the next week. It definitely keeps us on our toes, but it’s really hard not being able to plan for the future.

4. If it’s not good, then God’s not done.
Some of this might seem negative. Probably because we’re in a really tough moment in our journey right now. Our situation has drastically changed, and yet, I have to keep reminding myself that God works all for good, even if it doesn’t feel like it right now. Someone reminded me yesterday that God’s path is never linear, not even for the disciples. I’m keeping that close to my heart right now! In all the mess, I’m glad I’m here. I’m glad we said yes. There’s so much beauty even in the darkness.
