Understanding Black history is an everyday opportunity.
While it's , remember that honoring Black history and culture shouldn’t be confined to just this month. The contributions, struggles, and achievements of Black Americans are woven into the fabric of America's past, present, and future, and it’s vital that we recognize this year-round.
In my own backyard, Buffalo and Western New York have rich Black histories that deserve attention and celebration every day. From cultural institutions to countless Black-owned businesses that help shape the local economy, there are so many ways to dive into the stories, legacies, and triumphs that shape Black history.
Exploring these places, engaging with these stories, and supporting Black-led businesses not only helps preserve our local history but also ensures that future generations understand the full picture of our ever-evolving country.
Elevating and amplifying Black voices is also crucial. Far too often, Black voices are marginalized or silenced in mainstream conversations. By lifting up and supporting Black writers, artists, business owners, and thought leaders, we can help create space for many perspectives and ensure that the contributions of the Black community are recognized and celebrated.
For parents, there’s perhaps no more important work than helping our children learn about the rich cultural heritage that’s part of their world. By exposing them to Black history through books, museums, art, music, events, and conversations, we not only teach them empathy and respect but also encourage them to be active, informed citizens.
Here's a list we compiled of some places, spaces, and resources we encourage you to check out, not just in February, but throughout the year!
