What makes Alex Berko’s Sacred Place so remarkable?

Rather than setting traditional sacred texts throughout, Berko draws inspiration from the structure of a Jewish prayer service, weaving together writings about nature, community, healing, and remembrance.

From the environmental reflections of John Muir to the poetry of Wendell Berry and William Stafford, each movement offers a different invitation to consider our place in the world.

At its heart is a simple but powerful idea: perhaps the sacred is not something distant from us. Perhaps it surrounds us every day.

Our 25th anniversary season begins with Sacred Places.

What makes a place sacred? Our opening concerts explore the earth we share, the communities we build, and the people and places we call home. We’re especially excited to present the Western New York premiere of Alex Berko’s Sacred Place, a six-movement work at the heart of this program.

What a way to begin Season 25!

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our open rehearsal and anniversary kickoff. It was a joy to welcome friends and supporters into the room, share a glimpse of our rehearsal process, and celebrate together afterward.

For 25 seasons, Vocális has been shaped by the singers, audiences, and community who believe in the power of choral music. We’re grateful you’re part of this milestone.
