Providing habitat is the best way to sustain healthy wildlife populations.

Get ready for our final few installments of MythBust Monday!

You’ve probably heard of someone or even been a part of releasing pen raised birds such as pheasants & quail. Many people will release pen raised birds as a way to increase the population in a location. Although you can mean well by stocking birds, it can carry some large risks for local wild populations.

❌Stocking birds in an area with preexisting wild birds can be detrimental to the wild populations in ways such as disease transfer, higher predation rates and genetic dilution. Pen raised birds can transfer diseases to wild birds by direct contact with individuals or through f***s. They also lack “survival instincts” making them easy prey to predators and with large numbers being released year after year this may cause some predators to key in on those species resulting in increased hunting pressure and nest predation. Pen raised birds have a higher chance of carrying undesirable genetics that can get passed onto wild birds, such as mutations.

✅With all this being said, releasing birds in areas with no local wild populations is safe to do, but the best way to increase wild bird numbers is to create and enhance the habitat they require. While also reducing nest predators like racoons, skunks, etc.
