November 25 marks the UN International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
In 2024, an estimated 50,000 women and girls were killed by intimate partners or family members worldwide — 137 every day. Although men make up most homicide victims globally, women are disproportionately killed in their homes: 60% of all intentionally killed women died at the hands of partners or relatives.
Gender-based violence affects every region. In 2024, Africa recorded the highest number of intimate partner/family femicides (22,600) and the highest risk level (3 per 100,000 women). Asia followed with 17,400 cases, while the Americas saw one of the highest relative risks (1.5 per 100,000). Data gaps remain significant, with reporting countries decreasing sharply in recent years.
The UN notes that femicides often follow repeated episodes of gender-based violence — and are therefore preventable.
