The BCYLA annual meeting will be this Thursday, May 14 at 6:00 pm at the Brazos County Extension Office. We will hold board elections and read proposed rule changes. Exhibitor ledgers will be available for pickup AFTER the meeting. Any ledgers not picked up will be mailed.
There are four BCYLA Board of Director positions up for election. Each family will get a vote for each membership they have paid for. If you would like to purchase memberships for additional family members, please bring cash or check to pay the $10 fee per person.
Below are the bios of the six board candidates:
Jerad Johnson
Jerad and his wife Audrey have five kids ranging from 3rd to 12th grades, who have been involved with BCYLS for 10 years, and have shown market steers, commercial steers, barrows, goats, and lambs. Jerad grew up showing all species of livestock, and now owns and operates J&J Cattle Company in Bryan, along with his brother Justin, where they buy and sell stocker cattle, as well as replacement heifers and bulls. He has been a member of the BCYLA board of directors for the last 6 years and coordinates sales and load-out of all the floor animals. He has extensive experience with all aspects of the show, and of the livestock industry, and is dedicated to continuing to grow and strengthen BCYLS for future generations.
Brian Binford
My name is Brian Binford, and I would be honored to have your vote for re-election to the BCYLA Board of Directors. Having just wrapped up my first term, I have had the opportunity to be a part of significant growth over the last three years. While there is always room for improvement, I am pleased with the work we have accomplished during my term, and with your support, I would love the opportunity to continue working to make our show the best it can be.
I have lived in Brazos County for the past 25 years. I hold a bachelor's degree in Business Management from Sam Houston State University, as well as a master's degree in Construction Management from Texas A&M University. I have been employed with the City of College Station for nearly 17 years, with the last 10 years serving as the Building Official.
My wife, Wendee, and our daughters, Berklee and Brynlee, have been a part of the Brazos County Youth Livestock Show for nearly 10 years. It is something we look forward to every year. Although we are exhausted when it ends, we are always sad to see it over. As members of Southwood 4-H, our family is heavily involved in activities throughout the year.
My participation on the Brazos County Youth Livestock Association Board centers on what is best for the youth participants and how we can continue to reward their hard work.
Thank you for your consideration, and I am hopeful for your support.
Lance Bauer
Dr. Lance Bauer currently serves as the Executive Vice President of Beefmaster Breeders United, where he oversees day to day operations, as well as works directly with the Board of Directors in decision making and implementation of procedures. He grew up in Kerrville, Texas showing breeding sheep, market lambs, and heifers. He is a graduate of Texas A&M University, where he received his Bachelor's Degree in Animal Science and Ph.D. in Animal Breeding in Genetics. Lance and his wife Kaley moved back to College Station in 2022. They welcomed their daughter Aubree in 2023 and are expecting another daughter due in July. Lance has also served on the Beef Improvement Federation Board, the Ultrasound Guidelines Council Board, the Board at the Hill District Stockshow, and most recently filled an unexpired term on the BCYLA board. Through his position with BBU he has experience in the organization of the National Junior Beefmaster Breeders Association annual show and convention every July, he also has experience in overseeing the BBU National Convention every October. Lance also oversees the Beefmaster Educational Endowment Foundation in his role with BBU, where he is involved in grant approvals, scholarships and fundraising. He is eager to give back to the community and very interested in giving back to the Ag community because of the leaders that it develops.
Julie Bishop
Julie Bishop has been an active member of the Brazos County Youth Livestock Association (BCYLA) for 19 years. She has served as Division Chairman of the Rabbit Committee, Co-Chair of the Heifer Committee, and has assisted with the Steer Committee.
Julie and her husband Scott have raised three children through the BCYLA and have dedicated countless hours to the organization in support of its youth and future leaders. She is proud to watch former exhibitors step into leadership roles, and is committed to passing the baton to the next generation.
Julie has served two terms on the Board as Secretary. Even without a current exhibitor, she continues to strongly support the program as a board leader, show sponsor, and premium auction buyer. She is seeking your support for her final term so she can continue serving the youth of the BCYLA for the next three years.
Brandon Dominguez
Brandon Dominguez has 3 kids that have been active in the BCYLS for the past 5 years: Luke, a current sophomore, Emma, a freshman, and Abigail, a 6th grader. They've shown pigs for a year before moving to sheep, and chickens before moving to turkeys, as well as participating in FCS and rabbits, and starting heifer project(s) this past year. Brandon works for the Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory as a Veterinary Diagnostician, which is basically a fancy title for a liaison to clients to assist them with their testing needs. Through that role, he has consulted with livestock shows of every size across the nation on residue avoidance programs and animal health. While the opportunities for jackpot and major shows are enjoyable, he feels that county livestock shows are the foundation to exposing kids and the local community to agriculture. The friendly competition inspired by the county show pushes kids to develop a work ethic, leadership, and professional skills that extend far beyond completing a project. As a member of the BCYLA Board, he wouldbseek to strengthen the support for that foundation and broaden the opportunities for the youth in Brazos County.
Justin Homann
My name is Justin Homann. My wife and I have been fortunate to call Brazos County our home for the last 10 years where we raise our 13 year old daughter and 9 year old son. Both are actively involved in showing steers and broilers thru both 4-H and Jr. FFA at the local and state level. When not in the barn with them we are shuttling them around to other activities at the school, gym, field or Church where we are members of Christ Church in College Station. I spent 10 years of my youth showing livestock and competing at 4-H events on the State and National level as well as attending Livestock Board meetings with my parents who were active board members in the County I grew up in and would appreciate your vote so I could do the same for the youth of Brazos County.
We hope to see you on Thursday!
Thank you,
Brazos County Youth Livestock Association
