In Loving Memory of RJ Mitte 🕊️

Our hearts are heavy as we reflect on the loss of someone who meant so much to our community.

RJ Mitte was more than a familiar face or a public figure to us. He was a supporter, an ally, and someone who showed love and encouragement to our LGBTQ+ community here in Brownsville, Texas.

For BTX Pride Alliance and the people whose lives he touched, his support meant something special. Being an ally is about more than words. It is about showing up, standing beside others, and helping people feel seen, accepted, and valued. We are grateful for the support he showed our community and the difference that kind of kindness makes.

His presence in Brownsville left an impact, and we know that many in our community are feeling this loss deeply. Today, we hold space for everyone who knew him, admired him, worked alongside him, or was simply touched by his kindness.

RJ, thank you for being a friend to our community and for reminding us how meaningful genuine allyship can be. Your support will not be forgotten, and the love you shared will continue to live on in the people you touched.

From all of us at BTX Pride Alliance, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his loved ones, friends, and everyone mourning his loss.

Rest peacefully, RJ. You stood with our community, and we will remember you with love. 🕊️🏳️‍🌈

SAVE THE DATE! RGV PRIDE - December 12, 2026! 🎉🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

Why did we choose December? That’s a great question!

Pride is traditionally celebrated in June as a commemoration of the Stonewall Riots. We always do a Pride Kick Off in June and plan to continue that tradition. A lot of Pride Celebrations across the South host their events in the Spring or Fall due to the summer weather. Looking at our neighboring communities along the border- many host their Pride celebrations in October or November.

Last year we chose Dia de Los Mu***os as a chance to honor the rich and vibrant culture of our region and pay homage to our trans and q***r ancestors.

The RGV LGBTQ+ community is dynamic and multifacted. We want our Pride to reflect the beautiful tapestry of our community.

This means we can challenge ourselves to think outside of the way things are usually done.

For many, December brings to mind fond memories of posadas, tamales, champurrado, posole, lights, traditional music...We may not get snow (often), but the Valley’s holiday season is truly magical. We also know that holidays can sometimes be challenging for many in our community. We wanted to create a Holiday celebration that is inclusive, welcoming, and affirming while also celebrating so much of what we love about our home and our culture. If you don’t have a place to go where you can feel like your authentic self for the holidays, come celebrate on this day with us!

Why Brownsville? Porque le toca! We have always been committed to rotating our annual celebration to include different areas of the Valley.

Who knows what the future holds- that’s the beauty of RGV PRIDE. Next year we might see a parade in your hometown or a massive celebration in June. For now we are excited to bring you this RGV PRIDE Posada in 2026! 🎉🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

We also want to say Happy Indigenous People’s Day! Today and everyday, we are on Native land and Indigenous communities across Texas continue to fight for their visibility and self-determination. So much of what we love about the Valley (and about the Winter holidays), we owe to Native peoples. We plan to honor our history, our traditions, and our diversity at RGV PRIDE.

We would like to thank all the amazing bars who participated in the BTX Pride alliance national coming out day pub crawl🏳️‍🌈, and a big congratulations to all the winners of tonight’s prizes. A very special thanks to HunkyDory Tx ,BAR-B ,Studio 21 Brownsville 80s Bar ,The Kraken Lounge ,and Double Trouble for the prizes that were donated. It’s the amazing support of the community that keeps us going and we hope to continue to provide safe spaces for you and fun events to attend. Happy Halloween! Be safe and have fun!🏳️‍🌈🎃👻🔮
