Today, November 5, the Blackfoot Confederacy Tribal Council joins in recognizing Elouise Pepion Cobell Day—honouring the life and legacy of Yellow Bird Woman, a proud Piikuni (Blackfeet) woman whose courage reshaped history for First Peoples across North America.

Elouise Cobell, born on the Blackfeet Reservation in Montana, was known for her strength, intelligence, and unwavering commitment to her people. While working as an intern at the Bureau of Indian Affairs, she noticed landowners coming into the office expecting their trust checks, only to be treated with disrespect and turned away empty-handed. What began as quiet observation turned into a lifelong pursuit of justice. After years of research, advocacy, and community support, she filed the largest class-action lawsuit ever brought against the United States government—Cobell v. Salazar—challenging decades of federal mismanagement of Indigenous trust funds.

Her determination reclaimed $3.4 billion for individual landowners, created the Land Buy-Back Program to restore fractionated lands to tribal ownership, and established a permanent scholarship fund supporting Native students across the continent. Her case stands as a powerful reminder that one voice—rooted in truth and guided by community—can shift systems built on inequality.

Though her home was with the Aamsskáápipikani, her spirit is shared across the entire Blackfoot Confederacy. Elouise Cobell’s story is one of land, sovereignty, and love for her people. Today, we honour Yellow Bird Woman for showing us that strength and justice are carried not only through words but through action, persistence, and a deep connection to who we are as Niitsitapi.
