Plant native plants to help nature American goldfinch on native sunflower. Native plants support the entire food web by providing food for insects, birds, bats, small mammals and other wildlife. There are so many native insects hiding in our leaves. I rake mine into my garden beds!

There are so many native insects hiding in our leaves. I rake mine into my garden beds!

šŸ‚ As fall arrives in the northern hemisphere, here’s your reminder: leave the leaves!

When you let leaves stay where they fall, you’re creating food and shelter for pollinators, butterflies, and countless small creatures that keep ecosystems healthy. They break down naturally, returning nutrients to the soil reducing the need for chemical fertilizers. Plus, skipping the rake and blower saves you time, money, fossil fuels, and landfill space.

In the U.S. alone, it’s estimated that 8 million tons of leaves are buried in landfills annually. If we stop the practice entirely, we could avoid 3.5 million metric tons of CO2e annually while providing refuge to likely trillions of overwintering invertebrates.

A little ā€œmessā€ in the yard goes a long way to protecting biodiversity and keeping carbon in the ground.

Spread the word so we can end this wasteful practice šŸ‚
