Play isn’t what children do when they’re finished learning.

Play IS how children learn.

Research consistently shows that play supports cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development. Yet somewhere along the way, we’ve been taught that learning only counts when it looks academic.

At Palmetto + Pine, we believe play is not separate from education.

It IS education. 🌲🪵

Have you been following along and wondering what Palmetto + Pine is all about? 🌲🪵

This Saturday is the perfect chance to come meet us in person.

We’ll be at Beasley Farm Market from 10 AM to 4 PM with nature sensory play, hands-on activities for children, and our newest Wonder Kits to explore.

While the kids play, we’d love to answer your questions about our programs, our approach to learning, and the community we’re building here in Hernando County.

Make a day of it! Feed the farm animals, shop local vendors, enjoy the market, and stop by to say hello.

If you’ve been watching from afar, curious about forest school, homeschooling, nature-based learning, or simply looking for a village that values slow childhoods and connection, we’d love to meet you.

No pressure. No commitment. Just come introduce yourself. 🌲✨

There’s something really special about slowing down enough to truly see a child.

Learning Stories are one of the ways we do that at Palmetto + Pine. 🌲

They’re a narrative form of assessment used in early childhood education that captures learning through real moments of play, curiosity, relationships, and exploration. Instead of measuring children against standards or comparing them to peers, Learning Stories focus on strengths, interests, and the learning processes unfolding in everyday life.

Research in early childhood education shows that narrative documentation like this helps educators better understand how children think and learn, while also strengthening family connection and engagement in the learning process.

For us, this looks like noticing the small moments that might otherwise be missed. The problem solving. The persistence. The wonder. The way a child returns to something again and again until it becomes part of who they are. ✨

Each story becomes a window for families into their child’s world, not just what they did, but how they are growing, changing, and becoming.

We can’t wait to share these with you 💚

Gross and fascinating is always a winning combination. 🐟✨

Our Troopers spent the day stepping into the role of citizen scientists during a special sponsored activity with the Guy Harvey Foundation.

With careful observation and lots of curiosity, they explored a lionfish specimen up close, noticing details, asking questions, and learning about how invasive species can impact our Florida saltwater ecosystems.

Then came the art and science magic of gyotaku fish printing, turning observation into creative expression.

This is the kind of learning we love most at Palmetto + Pine. Hands on. Question led. Connected to the real world.

A big thank you to the Guy Harvey Foundation for helping make this experience possible. 🌊

Hi, I’m Mariah, founder of Palmetto + Pine.

I’m an educator, birth doula, photographer, nature lover, and what I lovingly call a village aunt.

Someone who has always felt called to walk alongside children and families and help hold the kind of community I believe we all need.

And if I’m honest…

Palmetto + Pine was born from both love and concern.

Over the years, I watched children lose something that once felt so natural.

Less unstructured play.
Less time outdoors.
Less freedom to climb, create, wonder, and follow their curiosity wherever it led.

And I saw how that loss touched more than childhood itself.

It affected confidence.
Problem solving.
Life skills.
Connection.

And sometimes even a child’s love for learning.

That stayed with me.

Because I believe play is not separate from education.

It is education.

I believe children learn deeply through muddy hands, meaningful relationships, real world experiences, and the freedom to be fully engaged with the world around them.

So Palmetto + Pine began with a question:

What if we created something different?

Not just a program.
But a village.

A forest school community where childhood is protected, learning feels alive, and families do not have to walk this path alone.

Right now, we are building that dream.

Our nature classroom is growing. Our community is growing.

And one of the most beautiful parts is that the families joining us now are helping shape what Palmetto + Pine becomes.

If you’ve been longing for something slower, more connected, and more rooted for your child ages walking- 12, I would love to welcome you into what we’re building.

What if your child couldn’t wait to learn? 🌿

Not because they had to. Because it felt like the best morning of their week.

That’s what we’re building at Palmetto + Pine and we want your child to be part of it.

Rangers: Early Academics in the Forest is our brand new program for homeschool kids ages 5–7, starting May 22nd right here in Brooksville, FL. Every class is play-based and child-directed, held entirely outdoors in our forest classroom.

We’re talking morning meeting under the trees, literacy in the leaves, math in the pinecones, science with all five senses, art from what the forest gives, and a closing story that carries the whole day home.

No worksheets. No pressure. No sitting still.

Just your curious, capable kid learning the way the research actually says they learn best.

Through play. Through nature. Through being alive in the world.

We are Step Up for Students approved, so your scholarship can come right into the forest with you.

Spots are limited and May 22nd is coming fast. 👇

The Forest School Gathering hosted by , supported by us , and was an incredible time.

Seventeen nature-based founders and teachers came together to discuss how to best support our learners and their families.

For me personally, the timing of this was so needed. While our classes are paused due to a family loss, my heart is tender. This time with other forest folk was a reminder of how real the work we do is, how real the communities we build are.

While we discussed logistics of running programs, ways to approach child-led planning, and the different ways we all “forest school,” my most impactful takeaways were how we all settled, opened up, and flourished in our authenticity because we were in an environment of consent, inclusion, and empathy.

I absolutely loved watching all of us as adults play in the creek, climb trees, make each other flower crowns, and enjoy the forest just as much as our learners do.

Forest school isn’t our business model.
It’s not a thing we do.
It’s not a place kids go to.
It’s a way of being.
Together.
