This is a huge win towards equity and equality for all New Yorkers. Hats off to NY leaders in Congress for helping spearhead this historic bill!

Each side got protections that might not have been possible without some level of cooperation from the other.

A survey from the National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE) found that nearly 9 in 10 (88%) Americans say the COVID-19 crisis is causing stress on their personal finances. The pandemic opened our eyes to the importance of financial literacy, and we need to equip our communities with the tools they need to prepare for the future. The Financial Fitness Act would increase the accessibility to financial education courses. We need Congress to pass this bill.

A new survey finds nearly 9 in 10 Americans say the COVID-19 crisis is causing stress on their personal finances, highlighting the importance of financial literacy.

"What’s increasingly clear then is that diversity as an issue cannot be treated in isolation – it must come hand-in-hand with equity and inclusion. And not only that, but businesses have a key role to play in bringing about this change – doing so is not only to their benefit, but also benefits the wider economy and society as a whole."

Businesses must do more to ensure a truly diverse workforce

With so many women being forced to quit their jobs during the coronavirus pandemic, we need to prioritize inclusive policies that will help get women back to the workforce. The passage of the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act in the House is an important step forward towards ensuring that all pregnant workers receive equal access and treatment in the workplace.

On Friday, the House passed the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, designed to guarantee workplace protections for pregnant people.

We must improve diversity in all areas, including among our business leaders. In terms of both racial inequality and gender inequality, we all know that the identities of corporate executives do not equally reflect the rest of our country.
The Improving Corporate Governance Through Diversity Act of 2021 would address this problem directly, requiring more transparency from corporations about the types of folks who hold leadership positions. This legislation and more like is needed to increase diversity in corporate America. https://www.cnn.com/2020/06/02/success/diversity-and-black-leadership-in-corporate-america/index.html?fbclid=IwAR2z3Uk4YA23G5pFMtmvDd-EFZN1Q37fBtP6JqvtFvqH0VbeD3cQUnxBVrY

Despite growing awareness of the need for diversity at all levels of the workplace, numerous studies show the number of black professionals on boards and in c-suite roles range from not great to dismal.

There are more than 30 million small businesses in this country, employing nearly 60 million people and generating about 50 percent of our gross domestic product (GDP). Small businesses are a major force in the U.S. economy and now is the time to protect and support them.

Urge Senators Gillibrand and Schumer to support passage of the 504 Modernization and Small Manufacturer Enhancement Act of 2021, which will provide funding for small businesses to grow and thrive.

Proposals making their way through the legislative process are under the radar but have bipartisan backing

"The Equality Act expressly prohibits discrimination based on s*xual orientation and gender identity in all 50 states. Twenty-one states have now established comprehensive nondiscrimination protections. But in the other 29 states, where half of all LGBTQ Americans reside, only partial and inadequate protections exist." The Equality Act regonizes the need to pass laws that protect the rights of all Americans equally. We're proud that the House of Representatives passed this critical bill and we urge those in the Senate to do the same.

Gay and transgender Americans have fought for America’s ideals. They are surely entitled to their protections.

“The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday called racism a ‘serious threat’ to public health, becoming the latest, and largest, U.S.-based health agency to single out racism as having a ‘profound and negative impact on communities of color’ and contributing to disproportionate mortality rates among people of color.”

Systemic racism remains embedded within our country. To reduce the racial disparities in our public health sectors, we need to create equitable policies that provide quality healthcare for all. By supporting the Anti-Racism in Public Health Act of 2021, we can do just that.

“Racism is operating not only with respect to Covid-19 but also with respect to infant mortality, maternal mortality, obesity,” said a past president of the American Public Health Association.

“Advancing equal pay would help ensure that women, and indeed all workers, are paid fairly for their work and are better positioned financially to weather current and future crises.”

Supporting equal pay legislation is crucial to further gender equality in our country. Legislation like the Paycheck Fairness Act would help ensure that employers are held accountable on issues of wage discrimination.

Paycheck Fairness Act's failure to become law, in large part due to Senate inaction, is a stark reminder of lawmakers’ unwillingness to disrupt a status quo built on undervaluing women workers and the stubborn persistence of pay discrimination.

Black women are two to three times more likely to die in childbirth than white women, and the CDC reports that most of the deaths are preventable. Black women deserve better.

We're calling on all New Yorkers to contact your representatives and urge them to support the Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act, introduced by the Black Maternal Health Caucus to correct these shocking disparities.

We strongly support the House passage of the Equality Act, an important milestone for more diverse and inclusive public spaces. This legislation would do something long overdue in our country: make discrimination on the basis of s*x, s*xual orinetation, and gender identiy illegal in the public sphere. The Senate needs to pass this legislation and extend legal civil rights protections to the LGBTQ+ community ASAP.

South Carolina is one of about two dozen states that have few or no statewide LGBTQ protections. The federal Equality Act would change that, but some in the state say the bill goes too far.
