Byre Clan Building Skills, Community, and Confidence at Byre Farm
Summer has settled in at Byre Farm in Bristol, Maine, bringing warm days, busy mornings, and plenty of learning opportunities. As temperatures climbed, both club members and volunteers sought out the shade between chores, while the farm's Highland cattle found relief by resting under the trees and cooling off with fresh water. Even during the hottest days, there was no shortage of activity around the farm.
The Byre Clan was pleased to welcome visitors and prospective new members throughout the month. Families joined the Club to learn more about its hands-on approach to agriculture, and many eagerly jumped right in to help with farm chores—truly embracing the Club's philosophy of "learn by doing." An Independence Day weekend Summer barbecue provided a wonderful opportunity for members, volunteers, and visitors to gather, share a meal, and celebrate the strong community that continues to grow around the Byre Farm.
One of the month's highlights was moving the resident Highland cattle herd from their winter pasture to the summer pasture. This pasture was cleared several years ago alongside the winter pasture but was not fully fenced until last July. This summer, the cattle were introduced later in the season and are already helping shape the landscape by browsing lower tree branches. Members are excited to observe how the trees respond over time and which species thrive. The farm has also begun bale grazing in the pasture, and early signs of healthy grass growth are encouraging.
The farm's Shropshire sheep continue to enjoy the lush summer pastures. Members enjoy checking on the ewes and rams as they graze, rest in the shade, and patiently await visitors during Sunday open farm hours.
The farm also welcomed some very small guests this month. With donated eggs from Charley Peaslee, a 4H volunteer, Byre Clan members successfully hatched donated quail eggs at home and brought the tiny chicks—each weighing only about four ounces—to the farm to share with fellow members.
The Club will close out the month of July by recognizing one of its members. Congratulations and best wishes to Ryan Foster of Bristol, a recent graduate of Lincoln Academy, who will leave at the end of the month to begin his career in the United States Army. Ryan has been an important part of the Byre Clan since its early days. His willingness to help wherever needed, his compassion for the animals, and his positive, can-do attitude have left a lasting impression on fellow members and volunteers alike. While he will certainly be missed around the farm, everyone at the Byre Clan wishes him success as he begins this exciting new chapter of service to our country.

The Byre Clan meets at Byre Farm, located at 25 Rock School House Road in Bristol, Maine, and is open to youth ages 8–18. The Club offers hands-on agricultural experiences that build confidence, responsibility, teamwork, and leadership—no prior farm experience required. New members are always welcome, and curiosity, kindness, and a willingness to learn are the only prerequisites.
Families and community members are encouraged to visit the farm, meet the animals, and learn more about what the Byre Clan has to offer. Whether you are interested in livestock care, farming skills, or supporting a positive youth program rooted in community, there is a place for you at the Byre.
