It's time to refresh your emergency car kit! ⚠️

Swap out heavier items for thinner layers, replenish your first aid kit and stock up on fresh batteries and water.

Pro-Tip: Don’t leave plastic water bottles in a scorching trunk for months — swap them out regularly for fresh ones, or grab a few shelf-stable water pouches instead. ⤵️

How safe is your kitchen?

Your kitchen is one of the most common places for household emergencies, but a few simple habits can help prevent them.

Keep flammable items away from the stove, never leave cooking unattended, and clean up grease buildup regularly. Check cords and appliances for damage before use, and make sure outlets are not overloaded. Keep a fire extinguisher nearby and know how to use it.

Staying alert in the kitchen helps prevent emergencies before they start.

How safe is the area around your home?

With hot weather expected over the next couple of weeks, now is a good time to check for outdoor hazards that could become bigger problems during extreme heat or an emergency. 🔥

Clear dry vegetation and debris away from your home, make sure pathways and driveways are accessible, secure loose outdoor items, and check that hoses or sprinklers are working if needed. It is also a good time to make sure outdoor pets have shade and plenty of water.

Small steps now can help reduce risks during hot weather and make your home safer if an emergency happens.

Everyone operates on auto-pilot once in a while. Caregivers should have a strategy to ensure that no one is ever forgotten in a hot car. Always be Weather-Ready. weather.gov/safety/heat-children-pets

Your home should help protect you, not put you at risk.

Take a few minutes to walk through each room and look for common hazards that could cause injury or make an emergency worse.

Check smoke alarms and electrical cords. Keep walkways and stairs clear. Reduce trip risks with secure rugs and good lighting. Store chemicals and medications safely. Make sure doors and windows work properly and keep a flashlight and basic emergency supplies in an easy to find place.

A safer home is part of being prepared for any emergency!
