Today our girls earned their Sustainability Badge in the most hands-on, fun way. 🌿💛
We had the privilege of working with the Somerville Nails Creek Rangers to learn about the lake and the purpose behind dams — why they matter, how they’re engineered, and how they protect and serve the community.
The girls didn’t just listen… they built.
They created their own engineered dams using sand, rock, topsoil, and clay. Each group explained their design and the thought process behind it, and then we poured water in to test how well their structures would hold up. There’s something powerful about watching girls problem-solve, adjust, and try again with muddy hands and determined smiles.
Afterward, we had a picnic lunch overlooking the beautiful lake — one of those quiet views that makes you pause and just take it in. We took a short walk along Coyote Crossing where the girls pointed out what they discovered: cutter ants hard at work, a leaf perfectly shaped like a heart, and so many different little details of nature that adults sometimes rush past.
In the woods, we paused. The girls paired off and asked one another, “How can I pray for you?” Later, we gathered in a circle, held hands, and each person either said out loud or quietly in their heart who they wanted to pray for. When finished, they gently squeezed the next girl’s or mom’s hand. One by one, squeeze by squeeze, prayers moved around the circle.
We could all be doing a hundred other things on a Saturday morning. But instead, we were learning, creating, noticing God’s creation, and praying for one another.
And that feels like exactly where we’re meant to be. 💚
