Ephesians 2:10 "For we re all His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, that we should walk in them"

Good works...so much controversy in Christian beliefs about good works. The Bible says to be saved, we have to have faith in Jesus Christ. You can't earn your way to heaven through what you think are "good works". Apostle Paul calls them "filthy rags" in the Book of Romans. Then he turns around and says this in his letter to the Ephesians. I'm confused.

Then I came across this explanation in the book "Hot Tub Religion" by JI Packer (Tyndale Publishing House): "We can never hope to do anything right. Never expect to perform a work that is truly good unless God works within us to make us to will and act for His good pleasure. Realizing this will make us depend consistently on our in-dwelling Lord, which is the heart of what is meant by abiding in Christ." So my good works grow out of God's working within me.

That explained a lot for me. I'm not doing the works on my own. God's doing the works through me because I am obeying His commands and doing His will.

Whew! I can now reconcile the difference.

Sticky Note Bible Quote 6

Romans 5:1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.

When I read this verse, I had to ask myself..."What does justification really mean?" I had to look it up.

In the dictionary, the adjective "justified" means having been shown to be just or right. So, to me, this verse says because I believe in Jesus Christ, God is pronouncing me (a sinner) to be righteous. I have a righteous relationship with God because of my faith in Jesus Christ. That's all God...His decision...His declaration about me. Not because of anything that I did. I'm not guilty before God even though I am most certainly not holy in my own right.

I'm justified in God's eyes only because I believe that Jesus sacrificial death paid for all my sins. It's God's free gift (of grace) which I could never earn for myself.

So, what does having peace with God mean? It's knowing that Jesus has done everything that was necessary to make me right with God. I don't have to suffer the shame and guilt for my sins and I don't have to fear death or worry where I will be in eternity. That gives me peace with my God. Thank you, Jesus!
