Here is the article about Meal on Main that will be appearing in the Observer:
On Saturday, September 20, the “field of dreams” moved a little farther west than Dyersville and happened upon the town of Breda. The famous line from the movie, “If you build it, he will come” rang loud and clear as 255 people happened upon a labor of love that stretched down a block-and-a-half of Main Street.
Walking past the barricades and polished semi-trucks, many Mass goers, community members, area friends, and visitors from near and far got their first glimpse of Main Street filled with white-clothed tables stretching straight down the center, decorated with eucalyptus and floating candles. The place settings, white covered chairs, and additional lighting strung up, down and across Main set the mood of the evening perfectly.
Attendees mingled and marveled over the course of an hour and a half, socializing and sharing drinks and stories with one another. As seats filled and a blessing was shared, 50 pre-teens and teens from East Sac FFA, Carroll FFA, and the Breda community emerged from the shadows with salads in hand. Breda Sesquicentennial Committee members served the patrons while conversation was had with the sounds of a musical trio playing a variety of music in varying genres added to the overall atmosphere of the experience.
As salads were finished and plates were cleared, main entree plates appeared heaped with steak, chicken cordon bleu, red potatoes, glazed carrots and a dinner roll ushered out by the smiling faces of the young volunteers. Yetter Locker outdid themselves with the mouth-watering meal that was raved about all night. The dining experience was topped off with homemade cupcakes decorated to celebrate the momentous occasion.
Once the plates were cleared and the piano, bass guitar and violin trio cleared the stage, the local band, Shanx, took the stage opening with the ever appropriate John Mellencamp hit “Small Town”. The music and energy continued past 11:00 and was the perfect culmination to a night unlike any other.
What started as a simple idea in the beginning phases of the Breda Sesquicentennial planning, turned out to be a true homerun. The hard work, countless hours, and gracious help from a variety of volunteers made the Committee’s dream a reality.
Thank you to the town of Breda; the Breda Sesquicentennial Committee; the workers; the cooks; the volunteers who set up, worked the event, and helped tear down; and to those who donated items and vehicles to use, you helped us avoid a strikeout. And to all of the attendees - a special thanks - you were the real MVPs.
And, finally, just like in baseball, miracles can happen thanks to rosaries in the windows. Mother Nature heard the pleas in Breda and gave the perfect weather to top off a momentous occasion. For Breda’s Meal on Main truly was “a street of dreams”.
