Can you imagine the migration distances of birds every year?? We can't either. That's why it is important that Every Bird Counts... head outside and track birds!!
Every year, billions of birds embark on extraordinary journeys across continents, navigating oceans, deserts, cities, and mountains in search of food, breeding grounds, and warmer climates. On this World Migratory Bird Day, we celebrate the resilience and beauty of migratory birds while recognizing the growing challenges they face along the way.
Migration is one of nature’s greatest wonders, but it is becoming increasingly dangerous. Birds face many threats during their travels, including habitat destruction, artificial light at night that disrupts navigation, pollution, climate change, pesticide use, predation by outdoor cats, and collisions with buildings and windows in urban areas.
The good news is that community action can make a real difference. You can support migratory birds by planting native plants, reducing pesticide use, turning off unnecessary outdoor lights during migration season, keeping cats indoors, and advocating for habitat protection in your community.
At Sea and Sage Audubon Society, we believe protecting birds means protecting the ecosystems we all depend on. Together, we can help create safer migration pathways for birds traveling through Southern California and beyond.
