We have a Windhorse update to share since we know many of our followers are active members of our community. Pigeon Fever has made its way to Montana and our beloved Baron came down with it a couple weeks ago. Transparency is important to Team Windhorse so we thought we would take this opportunity to give an update on Baron and talk a bit about Pigeon Fever.

Contrary to how the name makes it sound, Pigeon Fever is transmitted by flies, not pigeons! The name comes from the swelling along the chest and stomach that gives horses the appearance of having a puffed up pigeon chest. While it is contagious, Pigeon Fever is only transmitted when the fluid that drains from the abscesses along the swelling reaches a break in another horse’s skin. This is why flies are the major vector for spreading the bacteria.

In response to this Windhorse has put numerous sanitation protocols into effect while Baron is recovering to minimize the spread of bacteria as much as possible. All of the horses on property are wearing fly protection (check out our next post to see everyone looking funky fresh in their fly masks and sheets) and getting fly sprayed daily. While we are always conscious of fly management at Windhorse, we have upped the ante by harrowing the pens daily, utilizing fly predator products even more often, and hanging numerous types of fly traps all around the facility.

Baron continues to be a wonderful patient despite having to be quarantined and stand still while we clean and dress his abscesses morning and night. While he is not currently able to be in the same pen as his friends he is able to be in the sunshine and he can see his buds just across the fence. Please send our sweet Baron well-wishes for a speedy recovery and if you are part of the Bozeman horse community we encourage you to be extra aware of fly management!
