In honor of Earth Day, we would like to recognize some of the successes of our projects. The efforts of every one of our volunteers, donors, and students have truly made a difference. Sustainability isn't just a value we hold, it's the foundation of everything we do.
Our volunteer program last summer which was the beginning of our school feeding program is a prime example of sustainability in action. Our volunteers helped students at Suswa Primary School build a kitchen garden that would eventually be able to feed the entire school community. To ensure a thriving and successful continuation of the kitchen garden, we helped form a group of students called the “Green Family” who would be in charge of maintaining, harvesting, and sharing the results of the garden long after the volunteers have left. Drip irrigation was installed to ensure that only the amount of water necessary for the garden to sustain itself is used. Suswa is a very dry area and rainfall can be scarce making each drop extremely valuable.
In addition to the kitchen garden, our volunteers decided to come together to fund an additional program to ensure that every student could be sustainably fed. Our school feeding program has ensured that all 550 students attending Suswa Primary School don’t have to go to school on an empty stomach. These hot meals help sustain the students so they can be active in their education rather than focusing on hunger. Sustaining education for these students helps create a brighter future for the entire community as well as other rural communities across Kenya.
We hope to expand our School Feeding Program to to help other students in impoverished communities gain access to sustainable resources to have hot meals every day to continue their education. We are committed to sustainably supporting students across Kenya and ensuring every student has access to food and education. Education is the pathway to the future!
