The Unseen Sacrifice: Reflections on Commitment and Care in EMS Memorial Efforts

Mark Twain once poignantly remarked, “The truth hurts, but silence kills.” This profound observation resonates deeply with those who have labored tirelessly to establish Legends Park—a memorial dedicated to honoring Emergency Medical Services (EMS) professionals who gave their lives in the relentless pursuit of saving others. The heart of this initiative was fueled by genuine care and sacrifice from volunteers who donated countless hours and personal funds to bring this vision to life. Yet, the journey revealed a harsh truth: despite the noble cause, widespread indifference prevailed.

The endeavor to honor EMS heroes was met with unexpected apathy from many within the community and even from some within the EMS field itself. Conversations with relatives, friends, and colleagues revealed a sobering disconnect; many did not prioritize or support the memorial, underscoring a painful reality that Mark Twain’s words encapsulate. Even appeals to organizations and individuals, including American Medical Response officials, initially met with expressed support but ultimately faded into silence. This absence of sustained engagement culminated in the difficult decision to halt the Legends Park project, despite the personal investment of funds and hope.

However, amid this disappointment, there remain beacons of genuine compassion and commitment. Institutions like Benefis Health System, Metro Aviation, GovDeals, and a dedicated team of 36 volunteers stood firm in their care and contribution. Their unwavering support reflects the very spirit of EMS—selflessness, dedication, and honor for those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Legends Park may not have come to fruition, but the legacy of those who cared and sacrificed endures. It serves as a poignant reminder that while silence can indeed kill, the voices of those who care must never be silenced. In honoring these heroes, we are called not only to remember but to rekindle a collective commitment to care, respect, and recognize the sacrifices made in service of others.

A helicopter crash in Evergreen on Sunday afternoon left a road closed as emergency responders worked the scene, according to the city’s fire department.

The crash occurred at about 3:12 p.m. on South Main Road in Evergreen, impacting a private residence, according to a news release from the city. One person at the home was transported to a Montgomery hospital with cardiac concerns after the crash.

Two of the medical staff onboard the helicopter were injured with one in critical condition and the other listed as stable at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, according to the release. There was no patient on board at the time of the crash.

Investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board will be on site today, city officials say.

Congressman Shomari Figures has been in contact with Mayor Stanley Stallworth regarding the incident. South Main Street near the crash will remain closed as the investigation continues.

The department said the roadway from MLK to Evergreen Hospital has been shut down and residents are advised to avoid the area.

Our CEO/Founder received a letter from the President of the United States in which he states that the White House will remain steadfast in their resolve to support our first responders and military members. That the American Spirit is defined by caring and compassion.

So with all we are trying to accomplish for Montanas EMS providers, could you not spare $5, $10 for this cause? We; all of the volunteers here, believe in each and every member of the EMS community and are here for them and their families. We have families request things every month for their lost loved one; yet not one has offered a kind word, a donation to help us make this dream come true. So we wonder does it really matter to you to have your loved one honored? To be remembered? It makes us wonder why do we do this. Write a comment below, let us (who donate countless hours every month for your loved one, for this cause) and let us know your thoughts. We have some wonderful sponsors who believe in our providers, don't you? Montana, show us and every EMS provider who will be there when you call at the worst moment in your life that you care.

This morning we had a visit from the executive staff at US Event Medical Services and had a wonderful conversation, they were surprised that after all these years of Washington DC talking about it nothing has happened in regards to an Emergency Medical Services Memorial, AND that they wanted to help. The Folks at US Event Medical Services have offered to cover our office expense for all of 2026, a cost that our CEO/Founder has covered since our beginning.
