received a $60K loan from SOIL Boulder in March of 2023 which they paid off in full in the fall of last year. They used it, in part, to install a hand-operated mechanism to raise the panels in their greenhouse for natural cooling, thereby limiting their use of fossil fuels while saving money.

Today they grow a wide variety of produce on about 2 acres as well as in 4 large high tunnels which go a long way to extending their growing season. The remainder of the property is dedicated to pasture for their chicken operation. They currently have 2,000 chickens and another 2,300 pullets (young birds) growing for next year’s egg needs. Their chickens are grazed regeneratively, are moved to fresh pasture every couple of days and are fed a non-GM diet, free of soy and corn. They currently harvest about 1,000 eggs per day (575 dozen per week) and sell the non-laying birds to a neighboring farm for meat.

During Farmers’ Market season you can find Croft Family Farm in Boulder and in Denver at the City Park Market. They also source produce to several restaurants in Denver, Windsor, Loveland and Longmont, offer a CSA and host farm-to-table dinners.

“Our family loves what we do and knows that producing pure fresh food and fresh eggs is something this community needs and wants! Our food system today is broken in many ways and a lot of people have never tasted real food (food grown in living soil that is vine ripened and fresh picked). Our desire is to give you that gift. The experience of real food. Food that tastes good because it is good!”

“SOIL Boulder is a keystone institution in Boulder County for supporting farmers and ranchers.  In addition to supporting our bee winter shed, which has improved our wintering rates 400% compared to the national average, they were there in our time of need when our work truck broke down during extraction to help us to tend our bees.  Aside from the 0% funding opportunities that SOIL provides, they provide a critically important space for local ag producers to meet, share, and collaborate.  Thank you SOIL for all that you do for the community and for us as loan recipients!” —Chris Borke,

“SOIL Boulder is doing something bold! They are helping farmers secure the financial stability they need to stay in business and thrive.

Our farm has benefited tremendously from their help, by moving us closer to that place of stability and sustainability that we all desire and quite frankly, need.

Becoming a farm that is profitable and established requires financial security. Soil Boulder helped us move closer to that goal.

Our desire is to be here for years to come serving this community and growing pure food...Soil Boulder helped us speed up that process and put down deeper roots!
Thank you again for your help and for valuing what’s important...your local farmer.” Steve Cockroft, Croft Family Farm

Here’s a little retrospective on SOIL Boulder’s origins… SOIL Boulder sprouted from a movement spearheaded by Woody Tasch and others passionate about funding local farms.

SOIL stands for Slow Opportunities Investing Locally — and Boulder is one of several groups that have formed over the years in this spirit!

We are now a local non-profit serving the Boulder Valley area and have given 37 0% loans to date — funded by charitable donations from local members.

Now, Woody is fifteen years into field work and collaborating with communities and his work continues with a globalized support network helping local groups like by matching their loans.

The beauty of Beetcoin is that anyone, anywhere can make a donation that will support farms. We are hopeful that this broader movement will water the seeds of many local projects.

An ode to August Harvest 🌽

From wild apple trees, to community gardens, Boulder County farmers markets and beyond to Colorado’s Western slope full of 🍑
