In March 1975 — 40 years before the Supreme Court made marriage equality the law of the land — a county clerk in Boulder, Colorado did something no public official in America had ever done.

Clela Rorex issued a same-sex marriage license.

A newly elected clerk and single mother working her way through grad school, Rorex was approached by a gay couple who'd been turned away elsewhere. She checked Colorado law, found nothing requiring marriage to be between a man and a woman, and decided the fair thing was also the legal thing. "It was the right thing to do," she later said, "so I did it."

She issued six licenses that spring before the state attorney general ordered her to stop. The backlash was brutal — hate mail, a recall effort, relentless migraines — and she resigned partway through her term. But one of those marriages endured, and history caught up to her: in 2015, Obergefell v. Hodges affirmed nationwide what Rorex understood in 1975.

This Pride Month, we remember a Colorado public servant who chose courage over comfort — decades ahead of her time. 🏳️‍🌈

If your DACA is expiring soon, don't wait.

Consider renewing early when there are 150+ days left before expiration. Some renewals are taking as long as 7 months to process right now. USCIS is failing to process applications on time — and our neighbors are paying the price. We are demanding better.
