This big tree fell over during the wind storm the other night. Even though the tree itself looked healthy, the roots tell the real story. They were cut by the sidewalk replacement and the curbing. There was rot in the middle, invisible from the outside, but enough that the wind was able to push it over.
Fortunately for the homeowner, it landed between the porch and the driveway. Damage to one car, and a few scratches, but otherwise minimal damage.
Our outgoing commissioner Joe Myers and our public works head Bob Errickson took quick action. The tree was removed the next morning.
Keep this in mind when you are working around tree roots. The damage to the roots may not seem serious, but this can be the result.

Two beautiful white oaks were added to the landscape in the Hilltop Park this morning, thanks to the Bordentown City Sculpture Foundation and with the help of the Schino family to plant them. They were added here to help shade the sculptures in the summer time. The Bartlett boys coordinated the planting to make sure they have a good chance of surviving.

In recent years, there has been much discussion about the sidewalks in town. We thought that we should share the improvements that have been made in the last few months. Every lighter area is a shaved area that smoothed or leveled out the sidewalk. These are all from either Crosswicks (Farnsworth to just past Second) or Farnworth (Crosswicks to Park). The company that we engaged will come and do other areas as long as we can identify enough in an area to make it economically feasible.

Did you know that the following ordinance is part of our City Codes?

"Any person planning to remove a street tree, as defined as "tree removal" in § 237-75, with a DBH of 2.5" or more or any non-street tree (e.g. anything not defined as a "street tree") with DBH of 6" or more on their property shall submit a tree removal application to the City of Bordentown Zoning Officer or the person designated by the City Administrator to perform the duties ("Officer").
(a)
For street trees within the jurisdiction of the City of Bordentown Shade Tree Committee ("Shade Tree Committee"), organized under Chapter 230 of the City of Bordentown Code, review and approval shall be conducted by the Shade Tree Committee. Applications shall be submitted to the Officer or the person designated by the City Administrator to perform the duties, and shall be forwarded to the Shade Tree Committee for review and approval. Once the Shade Tree Committee reviews and approves the application, the Officer or the person designated by the City Administrator to perform the duties may issue a Tree Removal Permit."

In other words, if you are taking down a street tree, you must apply for a permit to do so. Unfortunately, this ordinance has not been widely known, and there have been a number of trees removed illegally. There are substantial fines for doing this.
