This morning, the piggos all went into high alert mode and, mohawks raised, tails in the air, ears erect, scattered into the woods as fast as they could. They have only done this one other time, although Stevey almost started the stampede about a week ago before deciding the alerting danger had passed and went back to sleep instead.
I was still sleeping with a couple snuggle piggos who are normally very slow, groggy wakers, including Stevey Wonderful, Princess Peanut, Suzy Q, and Kevin; when Stevey jumped up in full alert mode, gave a grunted signal, and everyone - literally everyone was still asleep except my 4/5am early birds Ruby Rose & Red Bull, Molly with them this morning - jumped up in the same alert mode and RAN, scattering to "safety" in the woods.
I don't know what alerted them. The dogs were not barking, though they had obviously been chasing something in the woods when they came up shortly after. Still, I, too, jumped up and ran out to see where they were going... and to rescue poor Suzy Q. and a pair of jeans (that I had set out to wear) that have elastic singes on the ankles which leave pretty big elastic loops, of which Suzy Q. somehow snagged on her tooth and couldn't get off. Rather than stopping, Suzy Q. shook her head, then just ran... jeans in tow. I was afraid she would hurt her tooth, get snagged and caught on something with them, and/or rip one of the few pairs of jeans that have not yet been piggo or work marked with rips, lol.
Jeans found safely dropped at the edge of the trees, I returned to the office and began ringing the bell. Slowly, everyone started cautiously coming back to the clearing. What I thought was really interesting was that, even back in the clearing, none of them dropped their mohawks or alert stance until Stevey Wonderful -- top hog of our little piggo family -- came back, sniffed around, and dropped his, declaring it "safe" then, later, "nap time for everyone" (since he would normally still be asleep at this hour, lol) following a special treat/reward for all the piggos coming back when I rang the bell, and a job well done by their "top hog leader" keeping everyone safe β€οΈ
I found this process fascinating the first time it happened a little over a year ago. I still find it fascinating when it happened today!! Piggos are very sensitive creatures with a unique sixth sense for things we, humans, are too out of touch with nature to sense. Watching their instant and unquestioning response to Stevey's signal, then waiting for his "it's okay" to relax -- fascinating!!! It didn't matter if I, as mom and guardian, said it was okay -- because I, as a human, couldn't sense the alarm trigger. It had to be their leader. So cool!
Sweet little Kevin was an absolute fireball, lol! One of the first piggos to run back, Kevin began strutting back in forth in front of me in 'guard mode' with his baby mohawk high as it could go and his little snoot up in the air sniffing out danger -- all with an, "it's okay, mom! I'll keep you safe!!" that only sweet little boys with wood swords and pop-guns can pull off π
Nature is cool!!! Piggos are AWESOME!!! God is great to keep us all safe!! And I absolutely love our little family here at WPMPS ππ
