The last 100 yards:
“So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up. Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone—especially to those in the family of faith.” Galatians 6:9-10 NLT
Deep in the thick bush of Zimbabwe on a 100 degree day I wounded a Cape Buffalo in a botched frontal shot through dense cover. We slowly dry tracked him for hours and miles as he made his attempt to escape. The trail grew fainter and fainter as blood stopped and his track began to fade into all the other tracks around.
I have been in this situation many times hunting over the years. Excitement and hope fading, the sinking feeling of imminent failure creeping in. I sat down, dehydrated and discouraged. I knew we had lost the buff. The trackers, I knew, knew he was gone but were just putting on a show of hope. I leaned over and told my friend, Ben, “it’s over, he’s gone.” As the words were still settling and resignation was taking hold, chaos erupted 100 yards from us as the lead tracker, Boanie, stumbled right into the wounded bull and the PH’s gun thundered. People were running as the bull charged around and we leapt to our feet and ran into the melee. A handful of rounds and a ton of adrenaline later the bull had expired.
As the dust settled, the only thing on my mind was that I had given up only 100 yards from what I was chasing. Had it been my call it would have been over. I then asked the question of Ben that I will ask of you, “How many times in life have we given up in the last 100 yards?”
I want you to notice 1 word in this passage. “IF”. The next time you get tired or someone around you gets tired of doing the right thing because it feels hopeless just say to yourself or them. “IF”
Here’s my challenge for you today: When we give up we know what the outcome will be. But what IF we don’t. Paul says IF we don’t give up, at just the right time we will see success and harvest a blessing. You don’t know how far you are from a breakthrough and IF you give up you will never know. You may only be 100 yards, 100 days, 100 minutes, 100 seconds, 100 steps from success. Don’t give up. Don’t grow weary. Don’t focus on what’s out of your favor or all the ways it won’t work out. Keep doing what’s right. Keep being a blessing. Keep the faith. Keep going the last 100 yards today.
