New research is adding to the growing interest in the microbiome and cancer care.

A recent study found that, in people with melanoma, the mix of bacteria in the gut helped predict the chances of recurrence after surgery and immunotherapy. It’s another reminder that the microbiome may play an important role in immune function and treatment response. https://nyulangone.org/news/gut-bacteria-predict-skin-cancer-recurrence-only-when-matched-microbial-fingerprint

Your microbiome is your personal collection of trillions of microorganisms that live on and within your body. It supports digestion, immunity, metabolism, sleep, and more. In cancer care, an out-of-balance microbiome may make the body terrain more supportive of cancer and may also influence how well someone responds to certain treatments.

If you’d like a broader look at why the microbiome matters in cancer care—and what may help support it—explore our resource here or via the link in bio: https://cancerchoices.org/resources/body-terrain-handbooks/your-microbiome/

Repurposed drugs are getting a lot of attention in cancer care right now.

For many people, the interest makes sense. When you’re navigating cancer, it’s natural to want to explore every possible option—especially when stories online make certain drugs sound promising.

But this is also an area where caution matters.

Some repurposed drugs do have scientific rationale or early evidence behind them. But in many cases, the research in people with cancer is still limited, mixed, or not strong enough to support clear recommendations. And like any therapy, these drugs can carry real risks.

If you’re curious about this topic, explore our page on off-label, overlooked, or novel cancer approaches, where we share evidence-informed reviews of several repurposed drugs and related therapies.

A new systematic review and
meta-analysis looked at acupuncture and moxibustion
in people with non-small cell lung cancer receiving
standard treatment. The study found improvements in
quality of life, chemotherapy-related nausea and
vomiting, and some immune markers.

For us, this adds to the growing conversation around
acupuncture as a complementary therapy in cancer
care—especially for symptom support and quality of
life.

It’s also important to keep the findings in context. This
study focused on supportive care, not cancer
treatment itself, and like many reviews in this space, it
includes limitations related to study quality and
variation across trials.

If you’d like a broader look at how acupuncture may be
used in cancer care, including what it may help with
and where the evidence is strongest, explore our
acupuncture therapy review here:

More and more people are turning to AI chatbots for health information. But in cancer care and other complex medical topics, confident answers are not always accurate ones.

This new audit found that many chatbot responses to health questions were problematic, often with incomplete or fabricated citations and readability levels that may be hard for many people to navigate.

A helpful reminder: use AI carefully, verify what you read, and lean on trusted sources and qualified care teams for guidance.

How is it used? What does the evidence suggest? Where might it help? And when is caution needed?

Our updated review is designed to make those questions easier to explore, with clearer information on how curcumin may be used in cancer care, what the current evidence suggests, and what to know before considering it.

When life changes in a big way, the question isn’t always “What should I do?” Sometimes it’s simply: What matters now?

For people facing cancer, that question can help bring clarity to treatment decisions, quality of life, relationships, daily habits, and the deeper choices that shape how we live.

This thoughtful reflection from CancerChoices co-founder Michael Lerner explores why asking what matters now can be such a meaningful place to begin.
