The more you know!
The Gremlin Bell
Let play connect the dots. Here are the dots – Old English Language, The RAF, Roald Dahl, Disney, back to Old English, then to your Gremlin Bell today.
Old English Language - A Gremlin is a mischievous little monster that loves to f**k with machinery, especially aircraft. It comes from old English word “gremian” which mean to vex.
RAF – The Royal Air Force started to blame unexplained problems with their aircraft and equipment on what they called Gremlins as early as 1929 while operating out of India and the Middle East. This really took off during World War Two when it was used throughout the RAF and other Common Wealth Countries. US Air Force personnel used it while stationed in the UK as well.
Roald Dahl – He was a RAF Ace Fighter pilot during WWII but you would be more familiar with his books and movies. They include: James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, The Witches, Fantastic Mr Fox, The BFG, The Twits and George's Marvelous Medicine. As you know many of these were made into movies. Well during WWII Dahl approached Disney to make a movie about Gremlins.
Disney – Disney bought Dahls screen play for this movie but never made it. They did however, make a few short films that showed Gremlins causing issues with airplanes and made it comical. These became popular among the US Servicemen as a way to blame unexplained problems on these mythical creatures. You can still see a few of these on Youtube. After the war these US service members took this legend of the Gremlin back to the States with them.
Back to Old English – Have you ever knocked on wood as a way to not jinx yourself? Well that goes back to the British Isles where they believed that spirits living in trees were good luck so you would say out loud something you wanted to have happen then you would knock on a tree to wake the tree spirit up to help you. That eventually got turned around to knocking on wood would scare away the evil spirit that wanted to cause you harm.
Your Gremlin Bell - So today we have a bell that scares away the evil Gremlin that loves to f**k up machinery, in this case your bike.
