APA National invites you to share your perspective on APA elections and leadership engagement by completing a brief survey and/or participating in a 60-minute virtual focus group.

This effort is part of a broader initiative led by APA’s Governance Committee to better understand what you think of APA’s election process, why you vote (or choose not to) and to understand your awareness of leadership opportunities. Feedback gathered will help APA to improve elections and strengthen engagement by members like you.

These opportunities are intentionally designed to use multiple engagement methods to reach as many members as possible and ensure a diverse range of perspectives.

Members are welcome to participate in both the survey and a focus group.

Member Survey
You will be asked to log in to your APA account to access the survey; however, responses are anonymous and will be reported only in aggregate. The survey will remain open through May 15.
Take the survey: https://www.planning.org/elections/2026/survey/

Focus Groups
Each session will be approximately 60 minutes, held virtually, and facilitated by members of the APA Governance Committee. Conversations will take place in May and June 2026, and feedback will be summarized anonymously and reported only in aggregate.
Register for a focus group session now: https://www.planning.org/elections/2026/focus-group/

APA is your community for professional growth and networking – we appreciate your time in helping us shape leadership opportunities that meet your needs!

Call for Internships: Boise State Urban Studies

Boise State is seeking Summer and Fall 2026 internship opportunities for Urban Studies students. These positions serve as vital educational experiences, allowing emerging planners to apply their multidisciplinary foundation in planning and community development to real-world projects.

Hosting an intern is a premier opportunity to mentor the next generation. While students bring fresh perspectives and technical skills like GIS or research, they also look to your expertise to help bridge the gap between classroom theory and professional practice.

To discuss hosting a student or to learn more about our program requirements, please reach out to Jillian Moroney at [email protected].

"Our department recently began using the APA Video Library for training sessions with our Zoning Commission on shorter public meeting nights. Personally, I am not a “video learner” and was skeptical that this would engage our commissioners, most of whom are at or near retirement age, but the feedback was surprising.

Our first two videos were Open Meetings, Public Hearings, & Successful Outcomes and Rules in Quasi-Judicial Decisions. Discussions during and after video presentations were highly productive; our commissioners are asking excellent questions about procedure, decision-making, and maintaining objectivity. This video series has been an invaluable tool in reinforcing our commissioners’ understanding of their roles and we would recommend this resource for commissions of all experience levels."

The hallmark of great planning is often that it feels completely natural. When a community is designed well, the infrastructure hums in the background with a well-timed crosswalk that keeps pedestrians safe, a pocket park that provides a much-needed breath of fresh air, or a mixed-use development that brings a neighborhood to life.

We call this "The Planning Lens," and we want to see the community through your lens!

Whether you’re in the panhandle of Idaho or a bustling city, we want to highlight the planning wins that make our communities vibrant and livable.

How to participate:
-Snap a photo of a planning element in your community that just works.
-Tag APA Idaho in your post.
-Tell us why it’s a win! (Is it the accessibility? The aesthetics? The economic impact?)

Let’s celebrate the intentional design that makes our states great places to call home.
