There are many renewable, clean energy innovations helping us transition away from carbon-intensive fossil fuels that cause climate change. Solar and wind are the most well-known but other technologies include geothermal (natural heat from the earth), tidal/hydro (moving water), and biomass (burning organic waste made from plants and animals). Here are some fun renewable energy facts:

56% of Idaho electricity is generated by hydro
11% of Nevada electricity comes from geothermal
16% of California electricity comes from solar
58% of Iowa electricity is generated by wind
Georgia uses the most biomass of any state

10 million! Yep, 10,000,000 is the number of birds killed each year by . Most of these bird deaths are due to the coal industry. It is estimated that up to 1 million birds die each year from interactions with the industry, according to BLM and the FWS.

The number of birds killed by in the United States each year pales in comparison. According to peer reviewed studies looking at data from universities, government agencies, and industry bird deaths might hit a few hundred thousand each year. Deadly avian interactions with utility-scale farms each year are even less at a couple hundred or few thousand.

All birds play an important part in our ecosystems, which is why the industry is developing technologies and processes to reduce including improved siting, high-frequency sounds, shutting turbines down during migrations, and different paint colors.

Our avian friends don't have it easy. Other daily threats to birds include high-tension wires (174 million bird deaths), pesticides (72 million), cars (60 million) and up to 4 billion birds are killed by cats each year.

The industry results in nearly 10,000,000 bird deaths each year. Yep, that is 10 million! Most of these dead birds come from the coal industry. It is estimated that up to 1 million birds die from interactions with the industry, according to BLM and the FWS.

Idaho generates most of its renewable, from , such as the Oxbow Dam on the Snake River in this picture. More than 75% of Idaho's in-state utility-scale (facilities that are 1 megawatt or larger in capacity) electricity comes from , the third-highest share for any U.S. state, after Vermont and Maine. ICEA is here to encourage Idaho to reach #1 by supporting technologies like & .

The Idaho Clean Energy Association is 100% behind the City of Boise's 100% renewable energy goal by 2040! We'll be leading the charge with education, consumer protection, and of course more local clean energy jobs! Consider joining us by going to www.idahocleanenergy.org to join the movement!

Expanding the use of geothermal resources could help make the goal reachable.
