Blessed Feast day!

Today the Order of Preachers celebrates the Feast of St. Mary Magdalene, Co-Patroness of our Order!

St. Mary Magdalene is an icon of God’s mercy. Her life magnifies the workings of God’s love: how He heals us, restores our dignity, befriends us, and calls us beyond ourselves.

In the New Testament, we are left with a simple introduction: “ . . . Mary called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out . . . ” (Luke 8:2). Seven demons—that’s nothing to scoff at! Whether or not she was a scandalous sinner, Magdalene knew the healing balm of God’s mercy.

The Israelites waited forty years before entering the Promised Land, but Jesus desired Magdalene for all eternity. Christ frees Mary from the destructive grip of demons and instead offers His abiding, life-giving presence.

The mercy that changed Mary Magdalene’s life still envelops the world today. The Lover who sought her still seeks us. The healing touch that cleansed her is offered to us right now. O Lord, call us by name that we may confess Yours: Jesus—God saves.

St Pier Giorgio Frassati pray for us!

Happy Feast of St. Pier Giorgio Frassati, a member of the Dominican Third Order!

I urge you with all the strength of my soul to approach the Eucharistic Table as often as possible. Feed on this Bread of the Angels from which you will draw the strength to fight inner struggles, the struggles against passions and against all adversities, because Jesus Christ has promised to those who feed themselves with the most Holy Eucharist, eternal life and the necessary graces to obtain it.

And when you become totally consumed by this Eucharistic Fire, then you will be able to thank with greater awareness the Lord God who has called you to be part of his flock and you will enjoy that peace which those who are happy according to the world have never tasted. Because true happiness, young people, does not consist in the pleasures of the world and in earthly things, but in peace of conscience which we can have only if we are pure in heart and in mind.

The Dominican Order rejoices in the recognition of Venerable Maria Petra Giordano, OP, a contemplative nun of the Monastery of Santa Maria del Sasso in Bibbiena.

On 18 June 2026, Pope Leo XIV authorized the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints to recognize her heroic virtue, an important step on the path toward beatification.

Born Nicoletta Giordano in Naples in 1912, she entered the Dominican monastery in Bibbiena at age 22 and gave her life to prayer, silence, fraternity and service. Over more than seven decades of religious life, she served as mistress of novices, prioress, and a collaborator in the renewal of the Constitutions of the Nuns after the Second Vatican Council.

Her hidden life reminds the whole Dominican family of the fruitfulness of contemplation: a life wholly given to God, sustaining the preaching of the Gospel through penance and prayer.

Venerable Maria Petra Giordano, OP, pray for us.

Mary our Mother, pray for us!

Today we celebrate the Patronage of the Blessed Virgin Mary over the Order of Preachers!

To remove Marian devotion from the Order would render it no longer Dominican in character. If we cast aside the proper willingness to serve Our Lady (the vow), throw away the proper uniform given to us by our Lady (the scapular), and refuse to offer the proper praise to Our Lady (the Salve Regina and holy rosary), I do not know what we would be—but I shudder at the very thought of it. Who can claim God as his heavenly father and St. Dominic as his father in religion, but disrespect and fail to love Mary as his mother?

The Order of Preachers is Mary’s Order. In imitation of St. Dominic, her name ought to be engraved on the heart of every member of our Order.

Given the centrality of Mary to the life of the Dominican, I offer a final thought: If you wish to give yourself to the Blessed Queen of Heaven, follow the way of St. Dominic.
—Fr. Titus Mary Sanchez, O.P.
